My 9 year old son has recently become very interested in the American Civil War and wants to learn more about it. Can anyone recommend any good books for a kid that age? Ideally, told in a narrative fashion but full of historical facts. |

‘The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War,' by Bruce Catton. I grew up with this book. Loved it. Fair warning, however: it does contain photographs of dead bodies. Nothing graphic. No blood and gore. I bring it up because my daughter wouldn't let me give my old copy to my 9 year old grandson for that reason. |

The Golden Book of the Civil War is super. A lot like the American Heritage Book, but a bit more manageable for kidlet sized hands. |

Fletcher Pratt's Civil War written in the early 50s. More for 6-8 (as I look through the copy I got from my parents in 54 or 55). Lots of art. Read it in a day. Haven't let it go. H |
