I'm about to prime two Thoroughly washed Papo figures with Gesso, this will be my first time using Gesso. Any tips or hints?

TIA

Aren't Papo figures pre-painted? Did you strip them?

BigJoeDuke09 May 2018 6:45 p.m. PST

I did not strip them, I am preparing to re-prime them based off a couple of previous TMP messages, sorry can't provide links at the time, just wanted to know if there was more than in those messages.

I like to mix my Gesso with Glass and Tile medium, about 50/50 mix rate. link

You can get spray gesso which makes things much easier. Also thin your paints and you will see the true magic of gesso. Think Happy Clouds.

don't thin the gesso with water . (haven't tried the glass and tile medium mentioned above)
never shake gesso , stir slowly . you don't want bubbles to form .
gesso self levels but be sure not to apply too thickly .
let gesso dry for a day then paint ASAP – it will rub off if handled too much .

The Gesso may look thick when you apply it, but give it 24 hours and it should shrink to a tight, thin base layer. Try a scrap test figure first so you are comfortable with the thickness you apply. I Gesso my vinyl/plastic figures (Reaper Bones, Caesar, Alliance, etc.) because I've had too many problems with other primers causing figures to never dry and remaining sticky!
