Western military sources said the military compound that was hit is located about 10 miles south of the Syrian capital city of Damascus… link |

No surprise here. Israel is eyeing Iran's growing footprint in Syria with grave concern. Things will only get more interesting now that, in related news, the Iranian nuclear deal negotiated by the previous administration is scrapped. No doubt a better deal could be had in light of recent developments in N. Korea. |

Israel had just warned Assad of this exact thing. He invited them in. He allowed them to set up shop and build new bases to launch attacks against Israel. So now, as Gomer Pyle would say … surprise, surprise, surprise! I'm really interested to see how Iran will try to escalate this. Of course, they'll claim that it was an unprovoked attack. Dan |

Cacique, That's some mighty fine rewriting of history. Sadly, that's probably how the official version will read and future generations will be entirely ignorant of who created, funded and armed ISIS that lead to this disaster. The majority of people now don't appear to know what's been going on there for the last several years. We should be more concerned if Russia might decide to find find its testicles and installs modern air defense systems covering all the air space over Syria and Lebanon and deter the aggression of Israel and the United States in the overthrow of another government. Or, what if China decides to step in and play the adult? |

Why is there an Iranian military base in Syria in the first place and what is its purpose? |
zoneofcontrol | 08 May 2018 8:21 p.m. PST |
Israeli news services are saying rocket batteries were set up/being set up at the airbase and Israel was concerned that retribution was coming for Israel's raid on an Iranian base last month. With the Israeli destruction of the Syrian/NK nuclear weapons lab and now these two hits on Iranian bases it seems the major middle east players are stepping up their game. |

ThePeninsularWarIn15mm: "That's some mighty fine rewriting of history" I admit I oversimplified. But what part of my statement was a rewriting of history? Please enlighten me. Dan |

Why is there an Iranian military base in Syria in the first place and what is its purpose? The main Russian base is a naval base that was established during the Cold War to give the Soviet Union access to the Mediterranean. It's rather obvious why the Russians would want to hold on to it. |

Iranian intervention and direct support were pivotal in keeping Assad in power. Much blood, sweat and tears were expended in turning the tide of the Syrian Civil War in favor of Assad. Like the US keeping troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran is maintaining troops in Syria so that its hard-earned gains and influence are not rolled back in the region. |

Iran is maintaining troops in Syria so that its hard-earned gains and influence are not rolled back in the region. And setting up rocket/missile positions to attack Israel. |

after the Israeli military hit an Iranian compound in Syria after …… after …… after …… As Ben Goldacre says "I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that" |

I guess some people haven't been following the recent threats from Iran, all this past week, about how those bases were going to be used to attack Israel. We here tend to wait until someone runs over some poor kid before putting up a new stop sign. Same with terrorist and other attacks. Israel doesn't wait. They know Iran meant what they said. These days, as long as our involvement doesn't extend beyond selling arms (just like Russia, China and others do), I no longer care what happens over there. It's their problem, they know it, and they need to figure out how to live with each other. Any time we get in the middle we get screwed and/or blamed for their entire mess. Dan |
