"The UK has a particular responsibility to construct an inclusive history of the experience of the First World War. It was a truly global conflict, and involved many Commonwealth countries that made huge sacrifices vital to Britain's war effort.

However, as the British Council's recent international survey — carried out in Egypt, France, Germany, India, Russia, Turkey and the UK — showed, the UK public has only a limited understanding of the extent and significance of the role of Commonwealth countries in the First World War, and is therefore some way away from recognising them appropriately…."

Most of the UK public aren't aware that we have had one world war, let alone two. They certainly wouldn't know who was on which side.

The average person doesn't even care about history, let alone a war that was fought 100 years ago. To them the Kaiser is as obscure a character as Napoleon or Frederick the Great. Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are much more interesting. However, anyone who does study the war is very aware of the Canadian, Anzac, Indian, etc. contribution. Just my $0.02 USD.

There has been a considerable amount of TV coverage here in the UK about WW1 since the 1st centenary commemorations. Much of it has highlighted the involvement of Commonwealth countries. I would guess that there is probably more awareness now about WW1 than at any time in the last 50 years. That said I doubt that many know that it extended beyond France/Belgium or Jutland.

Yes, sadly … most don't know or care about the World Wars, or history in general …
