I've done a couple of companies (1:1). Need some buglers etc, but here's what I've managed so far.

I have seen many illustrations of men of the 71st with a green pompom in the top center of the shako. Others show the green tuft at the front of the shako, as for all other units who wore the stovepipe shako. Does anyone know when one was changed to the other? link GdeP |

I just love to see this unit modelled. Buglers? Yes, but don't forget the piper too. These are Victrix and you must have the Highlanders, as I see you did the officer correctly with the sash diagonally. You will then have two arms, hopefully with winged shoulders, just begging to become a Light Infantry piper. Then there is the pioneer……. Seriously though, great attention to detail. Buff leather work, officer's sash, his different "shako" etc I lamented the lack of an NCO, then found him! Again, the diagonal sash, the central facing colour, the rank chevrons on both sleeves……much good research gone into this. The frontal tuft or the central tourie? The latter makes mores sense, as it reflects the origins of the cap, the former looks far better and I used it! Same applies to browned barrels for LI. I did them and thought the end result in 28mm was much less striking than gunmetal, however correct the finish. |

Thanks all! Deadhead, I knew you would find the NCO! Yes, much hacking knifework to get those Serjeants in sashes over the shoulder. Victrix highland torsos on Victrix British legs. I really only bother with the details for your benefit! :) I did try the central pompom on a few figs (they are waiting to be done in the next batch) but they don't look right to my eye so I decided to go with normal plume. |

Credit where it is due. The officer's cap badge, the horn, is silver. The ORs are brass. He gets a real shako, no diced band…he even has a light infantry officer's sword……..and he wears gloves. I always forget that, other than for cavalry of course. I make up small numbers to stare at them, so want every detail right. You have somehow produced a mass of them…and still got every detail right! Pure chance I went back a third time and saw your Guards below. I am working on Three Armies as such….great details |

This would be a British officer in Peninsula so wearing whatever feels like flashy and dandy would be OK. :) |

Thanks for the post. This is one of the next units I plan on painting and this thread has given some valuable insights. The figures will be old school 25mm Minifigs so I'm still on the fence about adding a piper since he would be wearing a kilt. I think the dicing on the shako should be enough to set this unit apart. |

Well is often said that that there was a piper at Waterloo dressed in their standard rig ie not the musician's/buglers' lace; kilt for parade dress yes. Easy conversion if you have Victrix plastic Highlanders and a set of Peninsular British.

Love those Ranks! The trousers are really nice too, very well highlighted. :D |
