A good but inexpensive primer for resin models? I was considering "Duplicolor Gray Sandable Primer" Is that good for resin models? Generally, for spray painting or priming any models from buildings to miniatures, Is it better to: 1. Spray on paper towels 2. Spray on cloth 3. Paper on top of cloth? |

I've never used the Duplicolor primer so I looked it up. The description states that it is a filler and a primer. My antennae perked up on the "filler" portion. I was afraid it may hide details on your models. I use Walmart's cheapo brand black or gray depending on need. Always worked for me without any globs or paint boogies. I like to spray paint on top of wax paper or aluminum foil. I was always concerned that spray pressure may churn up fibers from paper or paper towels. Also, as they are not so porous, they release easily when collecting your dried models. |

It looks like what is called 'high-build' primer to me. The sandable and covering imperfections bits on the can suggest this is the case. This type of primer is designed for car body repairs. The idea is that small gaps, scratches etc are disguised by the paint, leaving a flat and even surface to lay the shiny top coat on. So not so good for models. As zoneofcontrol said, it will tend to hide the fine details. I would avoid any paint intended for cars. It is designed to do a very different job… |

Gentlemen, This is wisdom. Many thanks. Which exact brand of Walmart primer are we speaking about? Can we get a link? |

"Which exact brand of Walmart primer are we speaking about? Can we get a link?" link Sometimes when spraying an odd shaped piece, you don't hit all the surfaces. Rather than going back and re-spraying and getting too much paint, I'll keep a small bottle and crappy old brush to do a quick hit touch-up. |

oooh, that IS cheap! Thanks. There's no Walmart near me but I am visiting the parents this weekend and there is one nearby. |

Interesting. In the Walmarts in Canada there are no Walmart paints and primers, according to their websites. They carry Krylon, Trem-clad and Rustoleum, all roughly the same expense. |
