Until now I believed that all the Bundeswehr M-48A2Cs were modified during the late 70s/early 80s as M-48A2GA2 , with the 105mm gun , new cuppola , and new mantlet (among other things) , but after reading an article in wikipedia (I know , I know…) about the armoured forrces in Europe at the early 80s , it seems that only 650 tanks of a forcé of more that 1200 M-48 were modified so… with the rest -presumably- retaining the old guns , cuppolas and optical sight and analogic fire control systems .

Was that so??

Or were the not modernised tanks phased out??

Thanks in advance .

The extra M-48s were put in storage as Leopards were produced. See link for a list of tanks in brigades over time:
