USAFpilot Some may be surprised to learn that it was mandatory reading in freshman English taught at the US Air Force Academy back in '80s. The author was invited to the Academy and made some rather humorous comments on how we spent 45 minutes of our lunch hour forming up and marching to the cafeteria. By the time we eventually sat down to eat there was only a few minutes left until classes started again. He saw the irony in things. That is an interesting anecdote ! |

Yeah, I think I actually read it FOR high school English, and that would before 1970, and in Omaha, NE. ;->= Might have been freshman UNL, though. It's been such a LONG exposition… I appreciated it, though would have preferred most Vonnegut, if making comparisons. Doug |

Yes. Still one of my favorites and very much on point in highlighting some of the maddening aspects of serving. |

Major Major Major Major. It's so funny I think I must be mis-remembering it. |

Too bad they didn't pick it up. Looks like it would've been silly fun. |

Read it in Vietnam. I used to amuse myself by identifying the 1960s equivalents of the characters within the various units I ended up in; there were many. LT |

Read it a couple of times. Looove it! Didn't bother with the movie because I didn't think it could live up to the book. |

Read it in the 70s and with a friend spent much of our time discussing which of our acquaintances were like the characters in the book. |
