A long shot I guess – I'm currently working on a wargaming project. Does anyone have any information on any GSFG units using BTR-50 as APC's in the 1960's ? I've searched around have yet to find the id of any Regiments confirmed to have operated the type. Thanks, Niall |

My understanding was that most of the tank divisions used them. |

Not sure about that – don't think there was ever enough produced to have completely equipped that many Tank Division MR Regiments. |

Why do you say that? They produced over 6000 of them and an MRR in the 1960s needed less than 200 per regiment, so that would be the total in a tank division. Remember that there was only 20 or so per battalion because they only used two per MR platoon. Mark |

Onomarchos, maybe the use of the word "produced" was inaccurate. Actually I was reading one of the declassified CIA documents from the 1960's the other day; it was questioning production of BTR-40 / BTR-50 and I think BTR-60 and whether units in GSFG had enough of each type to fully equip as per their TOE. I've read through all the USMLM Annual Reports and BTR-50 rarely get mentioned. That may be because they were so common; but I've yet to actually identify specific units operating them. I know they were there, just can't find any specific reference to them and unit id's. |
