So are you an eternal optimist before clashing with your
opponents on the tabletop?

If you mean "confident that I'll lose", then, Yes!

I have never approached a wargame with the "I'm going to win" mentality. It has always been a social event for me and my gaming buddies. We don't keep score of who wins/loses. Just in it for the fun.

This pic reminds me of the central-Asian game of rock-paper-scissors.

Their version is worm, stave, chicken, tiger; you can work out the hierarchy.

Victory goes to whoever get to the newspapers first so, given that I live with a journalist, I can approach every battle with complete confidence.

yes…until things start going wrong; and that usually happens around the time of the first shots being fired.

Have you ever faced a cornered chicken? All spurs, feathers, and beak. That poor tiger will never be able to show its face in the locker room again!

After I've rolled a few ones, I realize my tactics had better be darn good.

Roosters are evil. Poor tiger is doomed unless he has help.

You must be jesting!

Turn 1 I am the tiger. Then I roll a bunch of ones!
Turn 2 I am a lynx. Some more ones.
Turn 3 I am a ferrel domestic cat. More ones with a few 6's; settling in now. The rooster is in trouble.
Turn 4 I am a kitten. Rooster counter attacks, I roll an unreal number of ones.
Turn 5 I've been plucked bald, eyes gouged out, done. The rooster crows as it urinates on my carcass.

I' ll try again next week……

That's pretty much how my battles go.
