Vikander is the new Tomb Raider? Don't tell me it's about the acting, because neither can really act worth a damn. Have they completely forgotten who watches these films? Dan

Drunken Skunk: "And this thread is suitable for a "family friendly wargaming site" in what way?" Oh please, if you're going to take your kid to see Tomb Raider, the least you need to worry about is a simple bathing suit … specially one that covers all of the naughty parts. What in the world is so inappropriate about that photo? Do you not take your kids to pools, water parks or to the beach? I'm just curious if they will be able to produce any figures that even remotely look like her. Perhaps I should have crossposted to Conversions then. Maybe the best option would be to start off with the body of a really skinny Alien Grey, and to then do a simple head swap. What do you think? Dan |
Earl of the North | 12 Apr 2018 2:11 a.m. PST |
Your behind the times Dan, she actually fits in with the new look Laura from the latest games.
Not perfectly of course.
|
Cacique Caribe | 12 Apr 2018 2:12 a.m. PST |
Actually not even close. She is going to need a lot more of that "padding" to even look like that painting! She's shaped like a skinny but very toned 13-year old boy*. Not some physical superhero. Dan * Like this one:

Let me get this straight. Drunken Skunk has his account locked until Gwen, who we were told yesterday will be incommunicado for a while can fit in the time to "talk to" him. Who did he offend, and to what degree? Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we engage in the usual round of boob-shaming. I hope you show this thread to your wives and daughters. And mothers. |
olicana | 12 Apr 2018 5:39 a.m. PST |
Did he have his account locked for asking that? Personally, I don't much care for 'family values' or trust people with them but, it's a recognised point of view. Also agree with Winston's point about pervasive misogynist banter. Long past its sell by date and should be sanctioned so everyone can feel comfortable. Being a gentleman isn't just about opening doors. |
fantasque | 12 Apr 2018 5:53 a.m. PST |
Completely agree that this type of sexist nonsense is no longer acceptable as far as I am concerned. The ban hammer seems to have whacked the wrong mole here. More "padding" – good grief! Interested to know if CC has seen any examples of Alicia's acting? I have not seen the film yet but I heard she did pretty well with a thin script. |

This is a beautiful exercise in how quickly people get branded an "-ist" today. I already voiced an opinion about her acting. It's my personal opinion – yes, based on movies I've watched – and I stand by it. But superhero roles don't require great acting skills either. It's mostly about movement, stamina and yes … looks … for BOTH male and female superhero roles. So, if she's in the movie simply for the female superhero "look", I don't see it. She doesn't fit the feminine stereotype that the game (not me!) created and still portrays, albeit in less exaggerated form nowadays. If anything, just assuming that I don't like her solely because of her looks, or that because I don't like a particular actress that alone makes me a misogynist, now THAT is the sexist mentality in its prime. There are plenty of great actresses that don't need to worry one bit about any other agility skill or appearance attribute. They are actresses. And guess what? Same goes for men. So misogynist my … If she was playing Wonder Woman, or Helen of Troy (the face that launched a thousand ships) I'm sure some of you would be saying that someone else would do better at looking the part. Anyway, I've said all I had to say about this. Stick around if you want to, just make sure to lock up the Pub on the way out. Dan PS. Winston, are you blaming this thread for some rule Drunken Skunk might have broken elsewhere? Is that what you're trying to do? Why don't you ask Gwen or Bill? They might make an exception with you and tell you what really did it. Suffice to say, I had nothing to do with that, nor do I think his comment was in any way out of line. He voiced his opinion, and I voiced mine. It's what we are supposed to do. |

Regardless … she is in good physical shape. She didn't get that way without hitting the gym a few days a week … I'd imagine. |
Earl of the North | 12 Apr 2018 8:07 a.m. PST |
I've only seen the one review for the movie, she was apparently the best thing about it….okay its a tomb raider movie so the bar is set low. Also as I said Dan is a bit behind the times on this, Tomb Raider (both this movie and recent games) is now about a young Laura Croft starting out in the world and surviving events/conditions that she should die from…..its survival horror without the zombies basically (replaced by animals, hostile enviroments and bad guys). |
Winston Smith | 12 Apr 2018 8:45 a.m. PST |
I guess my main question is why this thread was started in the first place. It's about as relevant to miniatures gaming as another one you started where you were in high dudgeon that the Red Baron on the pizza box or ad was replaced by a woman. I'm glad you agree that Drunk Skunk was locked out for very dubious reasons, if it was from this thread. No. I'm not going to ask Bill or Gwen to ask for the reasons. Frankly, it's none of my business. But if someone is to be publicly shamed, with no reason given, it should be publicly discussed. Strangely enough, when you end up in the DH, the indictment is clear for all to see. Yet when you get your account locked for an indeterminate length of time, all we see is "talk with Gwen". |
Winston Smith | 12 Apr 2018 8:51 a.m. PST |
You know, this whole discussion reminds me of those salacious Victorian era paintings, showing middle aged and old Ottoman men examining nude women for the slave market. We are asked to pass on a woman's body to see if she is up to our exacting specs. And for good measure, throw in a boy. We used to have a "Needs more boobies" board, and this would have been PERFECT for that. Apparently the consensus of the old men here is that she does. |

If she was playing Wonder Woman, or Helen of Troy (the face that launched a thousand ships) I'm sure some of you would be saying that someone else would do better at looking the part. I rest my case. When is the last time you complained about a male actor's looks or physical suitability for the role? Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? |
Earl of the North | 12 Apr 2018 8:55 a.m. PST |
Honestly I took it as a fishing expedition since it doesn't make much sense on the points Dan was making, the actress is pretty close (well close enough) to the 'new' version of Laura Croft, apparently has done quite well in the role and he seems stuck on the Jolie/old buxom version which was replaced quite a while ago now. |
The Beast Rampant | 12 Apr 2018 9:29 a.m. PST |
When is the last time you complained about a male actor's looks or physical suitability for the role? Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? Actually, I and many others frequently complain why the diminutive and obnoxious Cruise is considered leading man material. But then, I also refer to him as "Jack Reacheround". Surely you can find a better example? Is the inside of the Doghouse tastefully decorated? I imagine lots of worn 60's motel furniture. |

I've only seen Alicia in Ex-Machina, and I thought she did a pretty good job in that. All of the reviews that I've read about Tomb-Raider generally state that she did the most with a slim script, and she looks the part for the reboot. IMHO she seems to be one of the better actresses around. As for who watches these films CC, isn't it generally young teens? |
Cyrus the Great | 12 Apr 2018 11:46 a.m. PST |
She was great in Ex Machina. I haven't seen Tomb Raider. |

I'm not sure she was the best choice to portray the latest incarnation of Lara Croft. I was a fan of the PC game back in the '90s but that was many versions ago. The drawing shown by EotN almost makes her look like a young Jillian Michaels. But to say that AV can't act doesn't hold water because she's won an Oscar for her role in 'The Danish Girl.' Even though she's a Swedish native. She was also excellent as a femme fatale robot in 'Ex Machina.' And she looks great even if her assets are modestly proportioned. So "there."

One of the main reasons she was hired was apparently because of her background in balett and dancing. She knows how to jump around. While that will become less and less important with better CGI from what I have seen the movie is filled with action movie physics. That is what Tomb Raider has been all about but it makes me understand less of this young Lara overcoming obstacles and growing reboot. The games were fun. The movies are pretty "meh". |

With regards to acting chops, Vikander's atrocious, on-again/off-again German accent in Man From Uncle was…funny (and I assume unintentional). I accompanied my daughter and wife to see TR, and thought it was badly edited/poorly paced for an action movie, but Vikander did okay--not great but not terrible, either. I do wonder why she was chosen for the role, other than that she is fit and dark-haired. Rob |
