I've had great success with Gesso.

Google this and you'll result in many sites that discuss the issue:

I've had good results with Valspar plastic primer for spraying. Brushing I've been using gesso.

I use Humbrol enamel paint as a primer.

A quick coat of watered down Elmers white glue then any flat spray paint or if you can't spray, Tamiya flat black, gray or white depending on your preference, brushed on.

Black gesso works for me.

I use the Rustoleum 2x Primer paint in gray or white, usually the gray. But it at Wal-Mart only a few bucks, lasts a long time.

I wash them in 50% washing up liquid, dry then seal with 50% pva white glue then undercoat with car spray

Artist's Acrylic, straight from the tube.
Makes a nice solid coat which stays flexible.

I love the Krylon paints and they work fine on soft plastics.

I've come to hate Rustoleum and Valspar. The paint itself is fine, but the nozzles clog up pretty solidly

I've always wondered about trying the automotive primers that are meant for flexible plastic bumpers and similar. I'm thinking they seem to be made for adhering paint to a flexible substrate.

Anybody ever try them?

Give them a good wash and then slather them in diluted PVA. Stiffens them up and paint sticks really well.

You can get spray Gesso at Hobby Lobby. The stuff really soaks up acrylic paints and works great with Hat soft plastic. You then might want to seal with "The Dip" which is an entirely different thread.

I've used most of the above and they all work. I've found that a good varnish is as important to keep the paint on
