Johnny Tremain, winner of the 1944 Newbery Medal, is a young-adult novel about the American Revolution.

The Disney tv show?
Definitely.
I collected the Armor hot dog plastic coins. And I sang along with the Sons of Liberty.
His girlfriend was really cute.

I'm with Winston.

14Bore07 Apr 2018 5:29 p.m. PST

Read that as a kid so yes I would

Dynaman878907 Apr 2018 5:30 p.m. PST

Book – no. Never heard of the show so no comment on that.

Yes, I watched it all on the Mickey Mouse show back when I was a kid. All the various historical series they had are what really got me into toy soldiers. Then there were the Marx toy soldier sets!!!

Loved all the Disney "historical" shows as a kid !!

"Born on a mountain top in Tennessee
greenest state in the land of the free
grew in the woods so he knew every tree
killed him a bar when he was only three

Davy Davy Crockett
KING OF THE WILD FRONTIER"

I-- had a little "45" -- for those who remember such things? No, not a gun !!!
I would pick up the needle at the end of the song and put it back on the record --over and over and over until one of my older brothers slapped me in the head !!!

Can anyone name the actor who played Swamp Fox?

Russ – Leslie Nielsen played the Swamp Fox

Those early Disney programs were really formational for many of us. Throw in the Marx toy soldier sets and we were hooked. Just don't see those kinds of toys today.

Read the book as a kid- slightly different from the movie as I recall. I thought all those Disney/old movies were great; Swamp Fox, Davy Crockett, Savage Sam and Old Yeller. Maybe why I started wargaming.

Every time I watched one of the Leslie Nielsen "cop Comedies" I would start singing "swamp Fox!!"
Everyone is correct --throw in Marx and you have a perfect historical storm for a youngster!

The head nun in my school, kicked me out of my first communion class for whistling Davey Crockett while standing in line. So upset, I ran away to grandpas. He turned me in though.

My oldest is in High School. Read him Johnny Tremain in Elementary School. Recommend it for any kid that age.

KSmyth07 Apr 2018 9:55 p.m. PST

Yes, I read it to my students when I taught elementary school.

Ha,ha,ha, all those old memories from a time when things were much simpler. They really implanted in you a sense of courage and strength as well as giving you a desire to look further into history.

Red Jacket Supporting Member of TMP08 Apr 2018 9:50 a.m. PST

Yes, the book is a great read for a young adult. It was required reading for my class in junior high (which I guess is now "middle school").

pvernon Supporting Member of TMP08 Apr 2018 1:18 p.m. PST

Red Jacket – ditto

rmaker08 Apr 2018 2:52 p.m. PST

goragrad08 Apr 2018 10:21 p.m. PST

Yes.

Old Wolfman09 Apr 2018 7:38 a.m. PST

Even referenced it on "Family Guy".

surdu200510 Apr 2018 11:18 a.m. PST

On top of the Disney historical series already mentioned, don't forget El Fago Bacca and Zorro.
