… Long War' Against China and Russia "Think of it as the most momentous military planning on Earth right now. Who's even paying attention, given the eternal changing of the guard at the White House, as well as the latest in tweets, sexual revelations and investigations of every sort? And yet it increasingly looks as if, thanks to current Pentagon planning, a twenty-first-century version of the Cold War with dangerous new twists has begun and hardly anyone has even noticed. In 2006, when the Department of Defense spelled out its future security role, it saw only one overriding mission its "Long War" against international terrorism. "With its allies and partners, the United States must be prepared to wage this war in many locations simultaneously and for some years to come," the Pentagon's Quadrennial Defense Review explained that year. Twelve years later, the Pentagon has officially announced that that long war is drawing to a close even though at least seven counterinsurgency conflicts still rage across the Greater Middle East and Africa and a new long war has begun, a permanent campaign to contain China and Russia in Eurasia…." Sounds like they are finally planning to fight the next war, instead of the last one. |

Doug Redshirt: "Sounds like the usual defense industrial complex speak for give us more money." LOL. Sounds more like a simple natural reaction by the US to all the big military budget changes made in those other countries*. Simple cause and effect. Plus many essential programs were abandoned and maintenance supply needs were neglected in recent years, and they need to be corrected if we are to have an effective military force. MJKerner: "Sounds like they are finally planning to fight the next war, instead of the last one." Indeed! About time. And hopefully win them. Dan * And China doesn't even bother to really ask for the funds they take. Whatever "votes" taken are usually unanimous and without debate, for obvious reasons. |

CC, you really don't understand how Eastern cultures work. The debate doesn't happen on the floor. The discussion happens behind closed doors as someone gets support for their idea. The vote itself is the formal statement of "here's what we're going to do." |

Here is how totalitarian systems work, the dictator determines what will happen and everyone who wants to live votes "Yes." Mike Bunkermeister Creek bunkermeister.blogspot.com |

Well, up till Xi declared himself "Pres4Life"*, there was still a discussion about who the Congress of People's Deputies would elect. That conversation just never happened on the floor. *Man, I'm still surprised that a Chinese President declaring himself Pres4Life wasn't immediately followed by a single gunshot to the back of the head. Thought they'd had enough of that nonsense back with Mao. |

Lol. Well, until very recently most people thought I was out of my mind when I said Xi would become President for life. Dan |

I gotta admit, if Xi can keep his anticorruption campaign working as a true anticorruption campaign and not a convenient political-enemy-removal tool, it's probably worth it for China. But that's a very large if. |

Yep. A very large IF. I suspect, however, that he's going to enjoy way too much being the Chairman of Communist SPECTRE and the new "spiritual" leader of the worldwide Marxist brotherhood. :) link link Dan |

Plus he already has the "Blofeld" (Zhongshan) suit, though he doesn't seem to wear it as much. Maybe he doesn't think it's flattering on him. :) Dan link
