"1809, France. Captain Neuville is called to the front, leaving his future bride heartbroken. Her sister decides to write letters on his behalf to cheer her up. But it all goes south when Neuville reappears."

The french take it seriously about clothes/uniforms of that Era…

maybe but this movie doesn't enter at all in that rigorous direction…
it is only a comedy, not War & Peace…

a such all-red uniform didn't exist in the French Hussars, they justify it explaining they just want a flamboyant colour and uniform without worrying about the accuracy of the uniformology…they were even more inspired by the British Army and Jane Austen than the French napoleonic Hussars regulations

Dans les romans de Jane Austen, les officiers portent toujours cette couleur rouge, qui est celle de l'armée britannique. Ça leur donne une prestance incroyable. Donc j'ai fait de Neuville un hussard rouge, sans me soucier de savoir si c'était exact du point de vue historique. Ce qui comptait pour moi, c'est que lorsque Jean débarque dans cet uniforme, on comprenne immédiatement à qui on a affaire…
