When you play Steve Jackson Games' Car Wars, do you typically use counters or car models/minis?

Winston Smith29 Mar 2018 7:21 p.m. PST

Models of course. This is The MINIATURES Page. Not the tiddlywinks page.

Dynaman878929 Mar 2018 7:25 p.m. PST

Counters. Never played it with no tiddlywinks either.

Matchbox, but it takes a lot of commitment to see it through.

For wasteland scenarios, the terrain is no big deal. What makes these games difficult is the "extras" city terrain and such can get really out of control (in cost) if you want the "FULL DEAL".

Narratio29 Mar 2018 7:46 p.m. PST

Same, both back in the days when dinosaurs played really small games.

Matchbox scale cars with weapons and crew from Johansen Miniatures, with over sized turn keys and hazard/drop counters.

Matchbox models with various Lego crossbows, plastic spues and surplus weapon bits glued on.

I never bought Car Wars but I've accumulated some stuff for Axles and Alloys. Minis with their mods all the way.

Models.
Modded.
Muahahahahahahahahaha!

Same goes for all car combat games.

Sure, I got a license … a license to kill!

I just got someone's old Car Wars rule books. Never had one myself, but played it with others back in the day.

With all the car models out there … it has to be those !

I started out with the counters when the game first came out. But then I saw a game done with Matchbox/HotWheels and now only use counters for pickup games.

Thanks to GypsyComet I have some of the original miniatures, which fit the regular scale. Why wouldn't I use those?

I'm planning on 3D printing some new models one of these days.

I still use my original Car Wars playing materials for 1X Car Wars Scale. I use a set of "World's Smallest Matchbox" plastic miniatures mounted on cardboard bases with cardboard counters for smoke, paint, and other combat effects. I also have metal miniatures in 1X Car Wars Scale for Car Wars (original Autoduel! Miniatures), Battlecars, and Formula De.

I have Matchbox and Hot Wheels die-cast cars for 3X Car Wars Scale, and out of print Micro Machines for 1.5X Car Wars Scale. I have not had time to create playing materials for these miniatures.

Micro Machines are being produced again starting in 2020.

At the Seattle, WA gaming conventions OrcaCon and Dragonflight, Legendary Car Wars Referee Greg Pratt runs Car Wars Tournaments in 3X Car Wars Scale in custom-built 3-D arenas. Greg's one-day events are spectacular to watch and very fun to play.

If you like models (hi, Armand!), the Car Wars KS has 'em.

"World's Smallest Hot Wheels" are currently available in stores and online. They fit the original Car Wars counters for cars perfectly (1" x 0.5").
