"We've all been wondering how long it might take for the third attempt at adapting ‘Dune‘ to be released and now it seems we have at least a two-year wait. Two years after it starts production that is. The news came from Denis Villeneuve at the Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois this last week. It started by him saying that "Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more."

The timeline is a bit long, but the idea of two films should be great for fans who can't imagine how you could cover the first novel in just a single movie. While David Lynch‘s take has many fans, including Villeneuve, it didn't quite capture everything from the novel.

The director went on to go into that thought as he said…"

I liked Lynch's version, liked the BBC series too….this has potential, assuming he gets his way, to be another Jackson and LOTRs…

"Third attempt" suggests that the first two, David Lynch's and the BBC series, didn't succeed. I disagree. Both were excellent adaptations.

The novel is actually short. I read it over a weekend when I was college student, then again in my twenties over another weekend -- not reading all the way through all at once, either, but breaking for food and hanging out and other stuff.

There are two or three or four or…is it a dozen now? ….sequels and prequels and a lot of potential for a BIG Franchise. If they just handle it right. Star Wars has stretched over forty years, Dune could be the same. Maybe.

and Dune was written by an author not cobbled together by a film student. We already know the Baron is/was Paul's grandfather no big spoilers just a chance to see it done complete not half right as other 2 were. I like liked some of both and I wonder if the casting can be topped from Lynch's epic.

Hard to be that original cast. Still, this has great potential.

Liked the latter version much better. Aired on SF and made a fan of my not SF oriented wife.

Wait and see on latest version – but isn't everything?
