Pre 1946-2006? Fulton's "Nautilus". CSA's "Hunley". USA's (not USN's) "Alligator". Holland's "USS Holland". … 1946-2006? Beatles' "Yellow". |

I had a toy Seawolf submarine when I was boy. It had a working propeller (rubber band system) and ran under water. It was dark gray and light gray, with removable black hatches, periscopes, and deck gun. I was saddened when, years later, I found out that the real Seawolf was sunk by friendly fire. My favorite name for a submarine was Skipjack. I had a toy Skipjack, too, with two red, spring-loaded missiles of the "You'll put your eye out!" variety. I also had a yellow Seaview from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. That was probably my favorite submarine. |

Although a little past Bill's cut-off date, I have to choose SSN-782, USS Mississippi, named after my home state and the fifth US Navy ship to carry that name (even though the first was named after the river). link But Nemo's Nautilus and the Seaview carry some memories from earlier years. Jim |

I've never served. But I have been on 3 submarines in my years. The first 2 were really touristing, in one form or another. Took a tour of the ex-USS Growler in New York at the Intrepid Museum. The only strategic missile boat open to the public. A rather (!) early version of a missile boat, that one. link I have also been on the ex-USS Pampanito, a WW2 US fleet submarine at the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco. link In the case of the Pampanito I've taken a tour, but I also managed an overnight stay on it, which gave me the opportunity to get a least a little (!) bit of a sense of how close and claustrophobic (and smelly!) such a boat could be. But for my favorite, I have to go with TNE's idea:
The Sea Tiger
Here my association is a bit outside of normal tourist experiences. I used to be a bit of an adventurer, and this boat has a place in my fond memories of youthful indiscretion. TNE's pic is from the film Operation Petticoat. Some of my fellow gray-hairs out there may recall that the movie spawned a (relatively short-lived) TV series as well.
1977 – 1979 It's hijinks on the high seas when a U.S. submarine has to take on a collection of female nurses. Somehow or another, the sub gets painted pink in the process. imdb.com/title/tt0075551That series was shot at Universal Studios in the LA area. I grew up in Studio City, right next door. Getting in to studios was one of my hobbies in my high school years. Sometimes we got in by volunteering for research (focus groups), sometimes we got in by getting tickets to tapings of shows with live studio audiences, and sometimes we just kind of "accidentally" wandered in to look around. Universal Studios was one of our favorites for "wandering" in … generally under the back fence at 2:00am. I spent many hours dodging the studio security rent-a-cops, and the pink submarine, tied up along a jetty in one of the two lakes in the studio back lot, was one of our most productive hiding places. ;-) I've been baaaad boy! -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |
