…Their Arsenals "* The US is the world's most powerful military, according to firepower. * Russia and China aren't far behind. President Donald Trump has reemphasized military strength, reportedly planning to ask for $716 USD billion in defense spending in 2019 — a 7% increase over the 2018 budget (though spending is currently limited by budget caps). US defense spending is the highest in the world, more than the combined budgets of the next several countries. But US plans to ramp up acquisitions of military hardware will only add to an already booming arms industry…."

Remember the US military budget is high,in part, because the pay of US forces is much higher than for most military forces. I suspect an American private makes more money than a North Korean General. The US military budget often includes things like breast cancer research which has little direct military application. And Brazil has 2 million troops? Who are they going to fight? And who ranks these things? Australia is number 22 compared to North Korea at number 23. So Australia can defeat North Korea all by themselves? Mike Bunkermeister Creek bunkermeister.blogspot.com |

I'm stunned by the size of the US military budget. It's more than the combined total of the rest on the list. In general, the huge sums of money spent on the military across the world is depressing. How much human misery such billions could alleviate. |

Must be an interesting definition for "aircraft carrier", since Egypt and Australia apparently have 2 each. I suspect that these aren't quite the same manner of ships as the huge US CVNs. |

"In general, the huge sums of money spent on the military across the world is depressing. How much human misery such billions could alleviate." Agreed. But, have you seen the level of misery in countries that have not been able to defend themselves over the centuries? |

I am curious as to how the rankings work. What does it take to be number 6 vs number 7 or 8 and what separates them? Is this based upon sheer volume of dollars spent and equipment? Or is it based upon strategic, operational and tactical abilities? Right down to the individual soldier, who would a soldier from the US, for example, respect the most in an opponent? Just curious. Interesting report though and thanks for sharing. |

"And Brazil has 2 million troops? Who are they going to fight?" Technically, Brazil has potential universal conscription. If you are a male of a certain age you are liable for service. There are many ways to get out of service, but I do have a young friend who was conscripted. But as to who to fight… there are the drug smugglers up in the Amazon, and Venezuela is a problem. There are issues with Argentina and they can always take back Cisplatina, which they held from 1817 until 1828. |

South Korea ranked too low. They are better than Turkey, present day Germany, and possibly France. |

What, no one's offended that Israel is ranked behind Pakistan and Indonesia? |

Looks like the US could sell about half their aircraft and fix a lot of it's internal financial problems. I'm sure 10 air crafts carries is enough. |

Wait. So Russia really has just ONE carrier? Dan |
Barin1 | 07 Mar 2018 9:59 a.m. PST |
Correct. There're plans for more, but theyy're typically corrected by another world economy crisis or oil prices ;) The Admiral Kuznetsov is the only operational aircraft carrier in the Russian Navy. Built by Nikolayev South shipyard, Kuznetsov ranks as the fourth largest aircraft carrier. It has a full load displacement of 58,500t. The spacious 14,700m² flight deck of the Admiral Kuznetsov can accommodate Su-33, MiG-29K and Su-25UTG/UBP STOVL fighters, as well as Ka-27S, Ka-27LD32 and Ka-27PLO helicopters. The ship can accommodate 1,960 ship's company, 626 air group and 40 flag staff. The Russian aircraft carrier is propelled by a steam turbine propulsion system, providing a maximum speed of 32kt. The weaponry is composed of AK-630 AA guns, CADS-N-1 Kashtan CIWS, P-700 Granit anti-ship cruise missile and RBU-12000 UDAV-1 ASW rocket launchers. |

I don't know who compiled the information on what each nation has in their inventory, but I think it is safe to say that much of the equipment that is included in their counts is…not immediately useable (and that is putting it optimistically). This analysis is s#!t. Rob |

Have to agree. This is very shallow data and as a guide to relative military strength pretty useless. |

I'd also question its accuracy. According to this, France has 296 aircraft, which seems low to me. According to Wikipedia it is 687. link Ok, I know that is Wikipedia, but it seems right, more than the table above… |
