Can it be said that you, a wargamer, is a fan of any stripe of the musical genre known as jazz? Yes or no?

I don't want to get into all the divisions and subdivisions of the genre – just asking generally.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP05 Mar 2018 10:58 a.m. PST

Only jazz I like is the Queen album.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP05 Mar 2018 11:03 a.m. PST

Some, not most.

Ditto Patrick Sexton above.

I will ignore your last paragraph and say that I can't stand Cool Jazz. Four musicians in desperate search of a tune. Five minutes of tuning their instruments.
But I really like orchestral jazz performing the standards, particularly if that orchestra started that standard.

KSmyth05 Mar 2018 11:06 a.m. PST

A genre I'm trying to develop a greater appreciation for. Love the greats--Duke Ellington, Count Basie. Am trying to enjoy "cool jazz." Not a huge fan of "modern jazz."

No.

Some styles, yes.

And definitely prefer to march to Vix and the Kid rather than Doodle's moldy fig drumming!

Some but not most

Another vote for "some". I love swing, but have little use for modern smooth jazz.

There is so much variation in what people refer to as Jazz. I agree with Winston Smith; I don't care for free form fusion jazz where everyone gets a turn to show how well they can play their instrument (although I admit for most it is VERY well) while improvising to show how much more they know about the music than the composer. I do like many standards that fall into the jazz category.

I can listen to John Coltrane when I'm in the right mood, but I'm not generally a fan of jazz.

Marijuana is legal in California now, and that would probably improve my appreciation, but I don't see myself smoking pot and going out like a 20-something any more.

I can listen to it, but typically won't if other genres are available.

Cerdic05 Mar 2018 2:35 p.m. PST

Well, I liked 'jazz club'…

I live in New Orleans, where jazz is inescapable. I prefer baroque and I occasionally sing sea shanteys in public but the car radio spends most of its time tuned to the local NPR jazz station.

Maybe in the background. Better Jazz or almost anything other than Country music. I can do Jazz but I am basically an old school Rock-n-Roll fan.
