Are there any TMPers who have played Gripping Beasts new ruleset Swordpoint? If you have can you post your impressions? Thanks TMP braintrust.

Also see youtube for a lot of informative videos about the rules.

Thank you for the link, what I am interested in is people who have actually used the rules and what they thought.

not a game I took part in but Swordpoint was tried out recently at one of our club games (See link below).

Its more of an AAR than a break down of the rules but there might be something in there that helps. Please feel free to post any questions in the comments and someone will try and help where possible

I seem to recall them getting some less than favorable reviews when they first came out. Maybe they have been massaged by some errata/revisions into a decent game now, I don't know.

Hey buddy, I've played a two games of Swordpoint now, one with ancients and one with medieval, and as a rule set it's good fun to play, but can feel like it's heavily linked to the momentum acquisition, rather than tactical use of your army, but that might be me seeing through rose tinted glasses as I lost my first game wink

The scope of the game is massive, and does allow the customisation of your army, meaning you get to really tool your game to how you want. I'd give the game a solid 8/10.

Swordpoint ticks all of the right boxes for me, and it is now my 'go to' rule set for Ancients. The rules are unit based, with 3-12 bases for each infantry unit and 3-8 bases for cavalry. The use of Momentum tokens encourages aggressive play and allows the players to attempt to influence key points in initiative and combat.

Commanders play a vital roll by adding to a unit's Attack and Cohesion values, as well as by rallying troops that are fleeing. There are also a number of special rules that add appropriate historical abilities and period flavor for specific types of units. For me at least, Swordppint rewards historical tactics while also providing plenty of engaging tactical challenges and decisions to make. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them here or in the dedicated GB discussion forum: link

We started to play Swordpoint in Madrid when the rules hits the market, and after a lots of mistakes, and the spanish versions comes out, now is our point of reference for ancient and medieval games (don't want to forgot "To the Storngest!", but in the latter case I did not find a lot of members ready to follow me). Anyway, at the club the people that play historical games thinks that is quite good and gives the feel of the differents periods, actually playing republican romans or Medieval French needs two totally diferent approach to the game. After a year or so of playing we find it quite enjoyable and not too demanding, It's true that the momentum tokes get a big importance but that means that you have to develop your strategy thinking about that. Furthermore the author is listening to the players and recently he just propose some logically amendements. What can I say, I like it and we will keep on playing it, a tournement in Madrid it's planned for novembre. At least, with Swordpoint I can field my republican romans, even the camillian one's, in the Triplex Acies formation. :)

A side question. Are the rules specifically for 28mm figures or can they be used with 15mm?

arsbelli20 Mar 2018 7:14 a.m. PST

For Shooting and Movement distances you may want to substitute cm for inches, but otherwise the Swordpoint basing and rules work perfectly well 'as is' using 15/18mm figures.
