Excellent – is that 15mm scale?

ConfederateSwede04 Mar 2018 11:50 a.m. PST

Forgot to mention the scale, they are mostly 20mm RSM95 figures.

Really nice stuff.

What did you use for the grassy field?; it looks great! Oh, and how did you do your back-drop? Did you paint it or is it a photo? Whichever it is, it blends in perfectly with your fields.
I can only hope to do as well with a "Custer's Last Stand" diorama I'm working on which will include all 5 of Custer's troops.

ConfederateSwede05 Mar 2018 12:03 p.m. PST

It's a fur mat from a private seller I think is here on TMP, the backdrop is from a railway model shop, but gonna order a new one that covers the entire background, the current has a very visible disjoint.

I also want to do Custer's last stand but I find no good dismounted 7th cavalry figures in 1/72…

Rush of the Union infantry

Swede,

I also could not find any that I liked (I have a couple hundred of the Thomas K+L 20mm Civil War mounted cavalry figures but they all have drawn sabers (although only those of the officers are obvious.) I ended up using Blue Moon's 15-18mm figures (I think Blue Moon lists them under War Paint or something similar on their web site, but if you go to a seller called Legends in Time (Google it), they have most of the figures you'd want, and they can get the rest that you would need (such as casualties and the Last Stand Vinnette (sp?) from Blue Moon for you and they are quite a bit cheaper than getting them directly through Blue Moon.) These figures have no sabers and the large floppy Andrews campaign hats issued then.

My Last Stand may end up titled "Custer's First Stand" as it represents the situation from Calhoun Hill to Last Stand Hill about 4:30 (Chicago Time), just before the tactical disentegration set in. Even at that smaller scale, to cover that entire area accurately would require about 20 feet of terrain and I'll only have 4 feet to do it, so everything will be severely compressed, but all of the other CLS dioramas I've ever seen have only shown the final phase on Last Stand Hill, and I wanted show all five troops with GAC.
I hope to post photos here this summer when I finish it, but first I'll have to figure out just how to post photos on TMP.

thank you for that tip Stephen, I did place an order but they didn't charge for shippinng so who knows if they send anything lol. They look pretty good and the mounted figures are nice looking too. Plenty of good natives in plastic luckily in 1/72.

Stephen Miller06 Mar 2018 11:48 a.m. PST

That's interesting since they always charged me shipping. Swede, I've always been really pleased with Skip's responsiveness at Legends in Time (LiT) with my orders, especially when I asked if he could also supply the Blue Moon figures he doesn't show on his website. He was able to place a special order with them and then send them on to me at about 15% less than ordering directly from BM. I'm using the BM/LiT Indians in the distance and mid-range and then using AirFix and other plastic Indians for the foreground since they're about 15% large. Helps provide forced perspective to the diorama.

There was some error with the website but I'm sure it will be sorted out. Atlantic had a Custer set but too cartoonish, I have a good mounted Custer figure from Imex, gonna use him for a big cavalry clash at Gettysburg against Jeb. Fascinating character. Recently I also learned that there were a few Swedes in the 7th, although they did not participate in the battle itself.

On topic: another angle from the muleshoe salient, I did have more sections of earthwork but can't seem to find them now :(

Just remember, when you do LBH, GAC has short hair.
