Looks like a new Nap title about a battle is due to become available later this year, and it is not about Waterloo! It is actually about a French victory – Marengo 1800.

It is by Terry Crowdy and is due out in June. I am sure it will create some interesting future debates.

Is there currently a recommended Marengo title or is this author going to set the bar? I know nothing about the period or battle, and enjoy campaign and battle accounts.

James Arnold's "Marengo and Hohenlinden" is a very good study.

Thank you, Dave.

I will second James Arnold's book as I am currently re-reading it and enjoying it as much as before!

I would concur with Dave and rustymusket, a very readable account of the battle.

I have Arnold's Marengo and the Osprey title on the same action, and will almost certainly buy Terry Crowdy's version. The more accounts the merrier in my opinion, which is why I have so many titles covering Waterloo.

But it is always worth having accounts by different authors in order to compare their viewpoints and interpretation of events and to see if they have come up with anything new or original.

I have a problem with James Arnold's "Marengo and Hohenlinden". It is well written and enjoyable read. It's a great introduction to Marengo. I wanted the more important battle of Hohenlinden covered in much greater detail. It get's about 20% of the pages.

I think everyone might desire or prefer books that covered just one action and in as much detail as possible. And it is a shame that some actions get little coverage or none at all. I fear we can only hope that more one battle or at least more detailed books will appear as time goes on.
