I'm looking for information on the armies of various Muslim dynasties of the Caucasus from the 9th-12th centuries. From what I have the Caucasus were great producers of arms and armor. The neighboring Daylamis were renowned as the best infantry in the Arab world. My supposition is that some of the dynasties would favor a large numbers of infantry including a goodly proportion of armored infantry. The usual Ghulam heavy cavalry and horse arches would be present. |

My reading of the period, the Kingdom of Georgia flourished well enough to contain Muslim influence to the Caucasian Albania (Azerbaijan). Following the decline of the Abbasid there was a series of short lived dynasties to include the Buyid, Dailami and Seljuk. That said it may do well to investigate further the individual groups that inhabited the Caucuses and when they made their conversion. I created my own army lists for the major Caucasian kingdoms to serve as allies or enemies of Rome, Byzantium, Armenia and Sassanid Persia for use with DBA 3.0. They are for the most part as you described. I found Strabo and interesting read. Though written during the 1st century AD he describes well the geography of the region, look for the chapters Iberia, Asian Iberia, and Asian Albania. link |

Check the quick DBM old army list books for location data. Another option are the WRG Armies and enemies books. |
