Makes a great read and an interesting skirmish.

Accepting that, can I ask however, would it really have happened? Would two small parties, out foraging in the Peninsula, have instead just left each other alone, "live and let live" and got on with hunting for food, keeping well apart, rather than start blazing away?

deadhead – I can see it happening. Soldiers are soldiers and they could find some common ground. Want to do it in the game? Well, you could. Take the Challenge Test.
It's a game mechanic in all THW games that lets you do things that aren't covered in the rules. Here's how it works:

Decide what a successful challenge looks like – both sides leave each other alone.

Decide what a failure looks like – if fail the French and British fight it out. But in this case, the French would have a +1 to gain the advantage.

Is the challenge easy (+1 to Rep) , difficult (-1 to Rep) or neither?

I think it's difficult so I count my Star's Rep at one point less – a 4.

Now roll 2d6 versus the Rep trying to score a result equal or lower than the Rep to pass the d6.

Pass 2d6 – Success.
Pass 0d6 -Fail.

Pass 1d6 you can choose to roll again but if you pass 1d6 (1 score of Rep or less) count it as passing 0d6.
Or choose not to retake it and carry on the game normally.

Pink rolls 2d6 and scores a 3 and 6 – passes 1d6.
Pink decides to try again and scores a 2 and 4. Passes 2d6 – French and Brits leave each other alone.

Hope this helps.
