I'm working on converting Fist Full of TOWS 3 to a Napoleonic game. Anyone else ever try to convert a set of rules from two entirely different time periods? How'd it turn out?

Years ago I did modify/convert GW's Necromunda for WWI (as Verdunda) and Vietnam (as Vietnamunda). This worked quite well since both of these periods are primarily firepower- oriented and have a dark and morbid background feel; the group I gamed with enjoyed them enough that most everyone ended up adding new "armies" to their collections.

Another member of the group began to work on a French and Indian War version, but with the addition of muzzleloading muskets the modified mechanics seemed to be leading to a substantially different game. Fun, though.

I'd say it happens all the time. A good current example is Dan Mersey's Lion Rampant game (medieval), that was converted with input from gamers to Dragon Rampant (fantasy), The Men Who Would Be Kings (colonial) and Pikeman's Lament (Pike and Shot). I understand that there may be more variants in the works.

-edit- yes – it looks like Rebels and Patriots is in the works, for F&I, AWI, War of 1812, ACW: link

I once needed a set of skirmish rules for am 1812 retreat from Moscow game. I used (with minimal conversion) Warhammer Historical Games' Legends of the Old West, which itself was a conversion of the GW Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. I think it actually worked better in a black powder setting than as an Old West game!

I did convert the game Tercios to the Anglo-Zulu War.

I've seen AK47 used for Biblical chariot warfare, it worked really well.

So go for it.

One of my favourites is pre-dreadnought warfare using DBA (De Bellis Navalis by Colin Standish).

I've done the odd period adaptation myself, like space combat in Asimovs 'Foundation' universe using Wooden Ships & Iron Men…

My co-author co-opted our move/fire sequence to be used in cowboy game that was falling down to a badly thought out sequence. It sorted out the game so well that we somtimes intoduce begginers to the sequence as the Cow Boy scenario even in moderns!

Those aspects not directly linked to the weaponary may have wide applicability. Terrain rules being another potential trans period application.

My son has converted our moderm system to SCI-FI and loves it. Not something I an temped to try however. Too many weapons for me!
