So I'm going to try doing some zombie apocalypse gaming with my family. Going to use Two Hour Wargames ATZ rules, and 28mm miniatures. Problem is I have zero zombies and next to nothing for modern/survivor types. Any recommendations for just bulk minis? I know Mantic and Warlord have some box sets but are there some better deals out there? Not worried about getting the best minis, just want to get going while they have some enthusiasm for this family gaming project. They have agreed to help paint so we'll see how this goes. Thanks for any help!

Some O scale (1:48) humans occasionally pop up on ebay, usually bulk amounts from China, for a couple of bucks.

Not a boxed set but Lead Bones at Recreational Conflict has sets of figures that includes unarmed, armed, zombie and dead of the same figure.

Don't know the availability anymore, but some years back you could get Horrorclix Zombies of all shapes and storylines for reasonable prices.

My entry into zombies started with heroes I'd been wanting to paint for some time, and lots of Clix to make it happen sooner. Now, my Clix still make appearances in the back of the crowd.

Walmart has "Buckets o' Zombies" for $9.95 USD. Has about 100 pieces, but not sure of scale.

I'll second Dan's recommendation. You really don't need specific zombie minis, after all, they are only cannofn fodder. O gauge railroad minis will give you plenty of zombies. Just paint or wash the he flesh with grey or green.

Don't get too hooked on buying loads of zombies. I have placed markers under a zombie model to represent 5 zombies and make change as needed. 30 or so should be plenty.

You could pick up Twilight Creations Bag O Zombies. 100 Z's in a single pose about 25mm tall. They also have Zombie Babes, Zombie Clowns, and Glow in the dark ones too.

You can usually find them on Amazon as well.

I occasionally run games of Akula's Rules; A Nightmare On Froth Street.
I've found that while it's true that Zeds are not much more than fodder, it's the individualized pieces that get folks hooked on the games.
I'd go with Old Glory andcakso pick up as many different brands of Of figures as possible.

For quick cheap zombies:

Roll of garden/packing wire (2 bucks)
cut 3" lengths approx. x lots
Bend in half and bend leg and torso shape, stick in poly styrene packaging.
Cut 1.5" wires approx. x lots
Bend to arms and shoulders shapes.
Hot glue or super glue to top of torsos.
Spray white wash yellow.
Mix some pva red paint and torn tiny bits of tissue.
Scrunch and dab onto skeletons, adding a ball of it for the heads.
Let dry, trim wires and glue to bases. You can paint some torn clothes and some fleshy bits and hair.
Quick, cheap, bloody, boney zombies.

I got a 25mm round hole punch from k mart for a couple of bucks. Add some old cereal packets = unlimited of free bases!

Dice,
I'd give a check on Ebay for "Wargames Factory" zombies, (they are out of business as a 'maker' WL games bought'm out) but you MAY find some of their original box sets there.

Ive also seen the game Zombiecide, the mini's are in basic game colors (yellow, blue, red, etc) but they have some great poses.
I'd advise just washing them in soap n water, maybe spray a dept. store Matte Finish (clear sealer) makes a great undercoat for the paint to hang onto.

Best of luck and keep us posted

We'll, P.T.G sparked a memory that I might have seen some of the Wargames Factory zombies at my FLGS. When I didn't see them at the store I asked the owner and he said,"Did you check the half-off rack?" Bingo! Turns out they were the Warlord Project Z boxes, which I think is pretty much the Wargames Factory stuff repackaged. So I got a nice start on my ATZ project with over 40 minis at under $1 USD apiece. Quite happy with that. Assembly is underway…
