Hi

I have a couple of questions about Soviet Naval Infantry:

Were they considered an elite unit? Were they better trained than the army?

Were their uniforms dark blue or black?

Thanks.

Paul

I will defer to real experts om Soviet forces, but I would rate them as "high morale" rather than "elite" -- if you system differentiates. As to training, the Red Army is a pretty mixed bag, with plenty of poor-quality conscripts. I'd guess the Naval Infantry are mostly regulars.

The uniform is a super-dark blue; I'd maybe use Paynes Gray.

They have a bit better morale, not fanatical, but still. More politically brainwashed.

They have better education, more advanced equipment, but no ammo pouches.

They have less outdoors skill, less capable of surviving, not instinctively covering, hiding and digging. More prone to take casualty. Definitely not elite in Flames Of War terms.

Were their uniforms dark blue or black?

Answer: both. For The Great Patriotic War, a rather unique uniform. Black trousers and blue jumper. link As the war dragged on they were drawing from army stocks, so start mixing those uniforms (and trouser colors) in. The two iconic uniform pieces they lovingly preserved were the vest (tee shirt) of horizontal dark blue and white stripes (scroll down 1/3 to the dress navy uniforms and 2/3's to the "MARINES" and "blue jacket") (hint: light blue @ the three foot distance) and the peakless cap. There is a (propaganda) film of Soviet troops in the trenches, at the command "show them who we are", they throw off their helmets and put on their sailor's caps and go over the top. URRAH!

I too am researching their uniforms. I'm I correct?
Enlisted…
Black trousers
Blue jumper or
Black coat

At first I thought the jumper could be black or blue, but from what I've read so far its the short button up coat that was black?
