"A combined detachment of rangers, militia and continental infantry came to the outskirts of the French settlement. It was a punitive expedition to horrify the inhabitants of French Canada. The Americans were not aware that the insidious Hurons had already discovered their detachment a few days ago and had warned the French command of the imminent threat. Several detachments of the Free Sea Roths were drawn to the village, and the natives, like vultures, flew from the nearest Indian villages, sensing the smell of profit and the bloody harvest of scalps…."
