I recently got the Bolt Action bug when I bought from my friend a box of Japanese Infantry, and I also got a MMG team and Mortar team which I got from eBay.

I've decided on doing Japanese troops from 1942 from either Singapore or Corregidor.

So any early advice as to what I need to get now?

I also have Bolt Action First Edition rules as well.

I do want to get some Armor but not too much.

I've not played a Bolt Action game yet but I plan to very soon.

Any help would be grateful.

Are you planning to get some US opposition for them?
You definitely need at least one set of order dice, a forward observation team for the mortar and off board artillery and a light tank.
The Japanese army book is probably going to be handy but you should be able to get some army lists from various blogs or Warlord forums.
If you look at the Warlord store the contents of the boxed starter armies are listed so this will give you an idea of what you should look at for a 500 + point army.
I believe the newer version of the rule book has a Japanese army list included and has improved some of the 'odd' rules plus increasing the importance of officers and senior nco's, you might want to check them out too.

You should get the V2 book. For opponents it will be easier to find WW2 British or Australians than the early war American uniformed troops. If you do go that way 1942 British would be in khakhi not jungle green. If you have some other sort of 28mm army even Space Marines or Orks you can use them as opponents to start with.
You can get all your lists here boltaction.easyarmy.com don not buy the army books yet. See what you can do with the figures you have at 500 points.
You do need order dice, either buy them or make sure you have 2 sets of D6 with the same shape but different colours.
Do not worry about vehicles yet, build up what you have and play some games.

Londonplod I do plan on getting some US opposition for my Japanese at some point but I want to build and paint my Japanese first before I think about getting the Americans.

gbowen I have the Armies of Imperial Japan book also which I got from my friend as well,as for other 28mm armies I have French and English Medieval Armies as well as some English Civil War troops as well so we'll see what happens.

As for vehicles I don't plan on getting any right now but when I do I was thinking of getting one of each of the Tanks, maybe an Armored Car and some Trucks.

I'll also check out the V2 book as well.

I also plan on getting the Order dice as well.

Ferd45231 I'll be sending you an email shortly to get the information from you.

Recommend you play a few games of "Bolt Action" before getting knee deep into that system. There are other systems out there which may be suited to what you are looking for in a WWII skirmish game.

I do intend to get some games under my belt before I go too crazy.

Once you've mastered the basic rules incorporate some house rules, including a more detailed approach to armor combat. I will be running two linked Bolt Action 1944 Bulge games at Cold Wars on Friday. I will be using several modifications, including rules for sighting, patrols and upgraded armor rules, but the basic structure of the game will be the same.

@oldnorthstate would you feel able to share your BA mods? – I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see them :)

oldnorthstate08 Feb 2018 1:20 p.m. PST

Most of the house rules have been developed by Mike Reese and I think they are available at the Bolt Action Yahoo group.

Great, thanks

I have a painting question.

What is the best Flesh color paint for the Japanese?

I'm not found of mixing colors so that's why I'm asking.

Asteroid X12 Feb 2018 8:38 p.m. PST

Captain Gideon,

I think that depends upon how you plan on painting your figures.

Do you "dip" (tinted varnish) your figures? Such as Army Painter Strong Tone?

Or do you want to just use one colour or do you want a triple palette with shading, base and highlights?

Or just a base and highlights?

Each of these choices will help determine the colour you may want to use and we could help you better.

Captain Gideon13 Feb 2018 8:01 a.m. PST

wmyers I don't "dip" although recently I have used like Strong Tone on my Medieval 28mm figures for example but I've not done it a lot.

I'm also not one to mix colors to get a desired color as I've never done that.

If possible I want to find one color for my Japanese.

Captain Gideon26 Feb 2018 8:33 a.m. PST

Couple of other things I need to ask.

First off regarding priming figures I wanted to know if I need to put stuff on the base and then prime it,or should I just prime the figure/base before I do anything with the base?

The other thing is about the Order Dice can anyone tell me what color Order Dice do the Japanese use?

Thanks
Michael

gbowen28 Feb 2018 3:17 a.m. PST

Paint then do the base as the paint will get all over the base. It does not matter what colour dice you use

Thanks.
