Vader was scary and had presence.

Emperor was the scary and all powerful power only hinted for a couple of movies.

Both felt that they were rooted in the story.

Snoke was just some random bad guy that had no background and no claim to infamy. Why was he bad? Why was he evil? One of the lamest baddies ever to grace the big or small screen. I mean, weekly baddies in Buffy were better than Snoke.

Correct about Vader.
Emperor was a politician, scariest of all.
Snoke was stupid.
Kylo Ren was scary until he removed his helmet and acts like a big spoilt kid.
Hux is an embarrassment.
Rey is just another toff actress out of her depth.

So far – and I've said this before – only "Rogue One" was good. The two sequel films are both very marginal, at best.

Darth Maul. Killed way too easily; seemed like a script-writer's throwaway. I wanted him as the Big Bad of the early episodes.

Never understood the over-hype/merchandising of Darth Maul. Only had about 5 minutes of screen time IIRC. "KISS-band reject" comes to mind… ;-)

Maul is a good villain in The Clone Wars…and Star Wars Rebels.
To be a great villain you need to have Menace, understated Menace is best.

I liked Vader, Tarkin, and Asajj Ventress!

The contrast between the iconic vilians Vader and Tarkin and the current crop (esp. Hux) greatly undermine the current attempts to recapture SW magic.

Virtual Tarkin far more interesting in Rogue than live action buffon Hux.

Why they evoke classic characters and sequences by inferior versions is dumbfounding. It only demonstrates the gap in creative ability.

Well I guess its B&B from GOT to the rescue.
