Perhaps we're not alone but instead reside in a multiverse stocked with all sorts of fantastical realms. These other universes are somewhat—but not exactly—like our own. Boy, this belongs in the Fantasy thread, doesn't it? Maybe there are co-tangent universes in which each of us are godlike beings, and one in which all of the universe is a vast fishbowl governed by a huge goldfished named "Pookums." Maybe, maybe, maybe! And why not, since the conjecture made in the whole article is untestable and unprovable! Oh, regarding scifi, one of the earliest examples of multiverse lit would be Frederic Brown's "What Mad Universe" from 1949. link |

I'm speculating a Universe where no other universes exist, and it turns out to be suprisingly like this one. (Okay, well, not so surprisingly…) I can see this "thought experiment" now: "So, dude. What if there were a Universe that, like, didn't have teacups? Could life even exist?"
"Whoa. Tripper idea, man! I dunno!"
"Wait. Like, do we have any teacups?"
"No, man. None at all."
"Well then, I guess that's our answer, then. No teacups, but we're still here."
"Righteous! We can exist without teacups! What about Twinkies?"
"Dude! No way. Gotta have Twinkies."
"Yeah. That would be a bummer 'verse, man."
"Totally."
