So for some Reason Spook somehow ended up in the best sidekick poll which is wrong.

So this is a poll for biggest breakout character.
It's a character that was meant as only a secondary or even a single appearance. But became so popular they either become THE character of the show and sometimes get their own show.

The most classical example is, of course, the Fonz. But Spook too, You could argue Vader(if we look at moves) He is far my iconic and "popular" than any of the heroes from Star Wars.

You have Steve Urkle, Fraiser etc.
And from animation, you have Bart Simpson, Bender, Stewie etc.

So who is the biggest breakout character? Can be from Movies or TV.

GurKhan31 Jan 2018 2:54 a.m. PST

From neither movies nor TV originally, Harry Flashman.

Rhoda from the Mary Tyler Moore show.

BTW Gunfreak it is "Spock" not "Spook". LOL

Vigilant31 Jan 2018 5:49 a.m. PST

The 3 prequels changed the focus of the original 3 from Luke's story to Vader's. It takes him from childhood to young Jedi, to turning to the dark side, to discovering his children and final redemption. So in that case Luke and Leia are breakout characters!

Pictors Studio31 Jan 2018 5:49 a.m. PST

Jesse from Breaking Bad. Intended to only be in that one episode or something and ended up directing where the whole series went.

Saul Good man from Breaking Bad… got his own show still in production.

Maude from All in the Family.

Kato was the real star of The Green Hornet.

In Hong Kong the show was known as The Kato Show and launched Buce Lee to stardom!

Thanks, Zulupaul I was genuinely wondering who the heck this famous Spook was. ^,^

It's a character that was meant as only a secondary or even a single appearance.

That Austro-Hungarian Gefreiter from the Bavarian Army … what's his name? Well, whatever, he ended up getting a big part in the sequel.

mad monkey 131 Jan 2018 7:15 a.m. PST

Boyd Crowder.

zoneofcontrol31 Jan 2018 7:34 a.m. PST

Ginger and Mary Ann.

Moonbeast31 Jan 2018 7:43 a.m. PST

Rodney McKay from Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. He was supposed to be a one off foil for Samantha Carter in Stargate and by season 2 of Stargate Atlantis it was the Dr. Rodney McKay show. Loved both shows.

Captain Jack Harkness? Depends how good/rubbish you thought Torchwood was, I suppose.

I was a big Justified fan too ! Boyd was the Joker to Raylon's Batman ! And don't forget Boyd's Girlfriend … Raylon had a thing going on with her for a while !

Rogues131 Jan 2018 9:35 a.m. PST

Michone on Walking Dead. I don't remember her in the early comics (been a while since I read them), and I think she was only going to be an episode or two.

Depends how good/rubbish you thought Torchwood was

Just the other day I was commenting on how I thought Torchwood was some of the best rubbish I had seen on TV …

Raise a glass for Captain Jack Harkness!

Well, if you want to measure it in terms of who became a major Hollywood star, Steve McQueen's career took off from his role as bounty hunter Josh Randall in the 1950's TV Western "Wanted Dead or Alive." That show was a spin-off from an episode of "Trackdown," about a Texas Ranger, played by Robert Culp.

Raylon and Boyd had a "love/hate relationship on Justified!!

what the hell is Spook?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP31 Jan 2018 2:35 p.m. PST

Spook is Spock after wrath of kahn.
He died and Became a ghost. Spooky Spock is spook.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP31 Jan 2018 5:16 p.m. PST

Spook is what happens to Vulcan names when you are using spell Czech.

zoneofcontrol31 Jan 2018 5:57 p.m. PST

Spook died on Earth on the African continent. He was lured to the Serengeti and killed by Giraffe of Kahn.

Narratio31 Jan 2018 8:07 p.m. PST

Nah, got to be Buffy bit player David Boreanaz. Went from minor boyfriend to major force to headline his own series in Angel and that allowed him to do Bones plus a few movies.

That said, +1 to etotheipi.

Texas Jack01 Feb 2018 5:01 a.m. PST

I would vote John Steed. The great Mr Steed was but a sidekick in the first season of the Avengers, and went on, with the delicious Emma Peel, to form the heart of a very great show.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP01 Feb 2018 5:34 a.m. PST

Angel was always intended to be a proper character. Spike on the other hand was suppose tp be killed in his first episode. But proved so popular that he became a regular. Then when buffy ended they brought him over to Angel.

I loved that time-travel episode where they tried to disguise Spook as a Houngarian Houssar who would always speak in a bad accent and wear his busby all the time to keep the ears covered!

Walking Sailor01 Feb 2018 8:41 a.m. PST

David Boreanaz is now doing a TV series "SEAL Team". 'don't know, 'haven't seen it, but he seems to be working steady.

Tommy Lee Jones as Marshal Samuel Gerard chased Dr. Richard Kimble (played by Harrison Ford) to an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and a starring role in "U.S. Marshals"

Old Contemptibles01 Feb 2018 9:32 a.m. PST

Oh Spock! I thought Dr. Watson won. But I am good with Spock.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Feb 2018 9:40 a.m. PST

IMHO, YMMV (OMG! ROFTL! YOLO IMGRA) Watson was the only sidekick proper on the final list.

Star Trek was patterned after naval customs and operations, and as such, no matter how much we want the Captain to be "the" guy, going to sea is a team sport. The great power conferred on the commanding officer of a naval ship is the opportunity to be humiliated and fired in public when something goes wrong. No sidekicks in the core leadership team.

That said, +1 to etotheipi.

Thanks. Yeah, he was really goofy looking, too. I bet nobody though he was going to become popular…

forrester02 Feb 2018 12:31 a.m. PST

Although not elevated to star of a show, Reg Barclay proved a very durable Star Trek recurring character.

Also 70's Doctor Who companion Sarah-Jane Smith coming back with her own series decades later was pretty impressive.
