"Velikie Luki, a small town near Kalinin in North Russia saw some very fierce fighting at the same time when the ferocious Battle of Stalingrad raged in the south. Velikiye Luki ("Great Bow or Bend" in Russian) was important for the Russians because it lay on the railway line that linked the German Army North and Army Centre.

The small garrison of Germans in the town was surrounded by the Russians and the ensuing fighting was as fierce as that at Stalingrad. The town fell to the Russians in January 1943…."

In an old issue of Miniature Wargames magazine they had a mini-campaign set around this battle with extensive orbats and maps.

There's a scenario in the basic box of Squad Leader called escape from Velikye Luki.

Lacks the stats and view from the other side.

crikey!

I've just been looking at the old GDW game of the battle thinking about setting a game there, rather than the hoary old battle of Stalingrad!

Richard, are they old issues? I am wondering if they are still available.

There were a lot of places where the fighting was as fierce as Stalingrad. This was said of Ponyri station during the battle of Kursk.

There's an old computer game for the battle on some abandonware sites (V for Victory: Velikye Luki).

I remember the grand campaign scenario being somewhat broken – as soon as the Germans were able to get the Nebelwerfer batteries within range of the Russian entry hexes, it was basically all over.

I think all the old issues of MW can now be bought on disc?
