Well this chap is a long way from home. A Senegalese Spahi, who, Ged tells me, found themselves in Indochina in 1885. Mind you this figure could appear in many a conflict I imagine;

a collective name for the Spahi were Sengalise Spahi ..though the unit in Tonkin were Algerian Spahi…guys in Dahomey were true Sengalise…they still excist as a unit in Senagal they can be used for a wide range of conflicts

Seems this chap is a French Turco officer of 1885. Ged tells me these were an Algerian lot with French officers.
Strikes me that someone has made a great job of his facial expression, both casting and painting

Ged has just sent me these pictures, telling me they are Black flag and 3pdr smoothbore cannon taken from actual example. Includes French land artillery and French Fusilier marines manning an 80mm mountain gun, Tiger men, Black Flag NCO and a French and a Black Flag General.
