Had another fun year. Thanks to all the HAWKs who put in time. Great job. Nate had a great time too and looks forward to going next time. Only downside is that my wallet is hurting from buying some of those fun games…

We even had one gamer fly his private plane to the convention this year, which is another Barrage first. :)

I only made it down for Saturday but had a great time. Thanks to all the HAWKS for putting on a good show.

Thank you to all the HAWKS for another great convention. I like the 2 day format and got a chance to play in some fun games.

Looking forward to Barrage in the Fall

So how many paid attendees (not including the HAWKS members)? Just curious how the January date did vs the Sept date?

surdu200524 Jan 2018 4:17 p.m. PST

The total count was about 175, including HAWKs. That is down a little from the normal September date. We'll make that up this coming September for Barrage 2018.

Glad Barrage went well. I registered but couldn't attend (family illness and eldercare issues). Hope to be able to attend in Sept., and to see the HAWKS at Cold Wars or Historicon.

Great job, folks!

That's great news. I would encourage your club to consider a one day fee for those that can't attend two days. I can tell you that a couple of us passed for that reason. Just a thought. :-)

Think he'd pick up a couple of stragglers on the way? Like me…..in Canada? Can't be too far out of his way. wink

surdu200525 Jan 2018 2:17 p.m. PST

if we decided to offer a one day ticket it will be almost the same price as a two day ticket. And people will use that as an excuse not to come. I encourage you to come if you want to have a great time gaming. We are trying to encourage folks to come for both days or we may have to drop the two day format, which would be a shame.

I was a regular attendee when it was at the high school. Honestly can't say what I paid back then to get in, but it was just for a day.

I thought about running a game, but that was $10 USD to get in for that, and I'd need my friend to help set up (big game, but very nice looking), so he would have had to pay $20 USD for one day to help set up and help run the game. Now we're looking at $30 USD if we want to split it and run a game. Add in gas and tolls. At that point he suggested we just stay home and run a game. Just telling you how two of us thought it thru. People who are generally game masters think a bit differently perhaps. Now someone coming to play in games might have an entirely different take on things.

I can't speak for others, but it has to be something pretty special for me to take a day off from work. Even at HMGS cons I only take Friday off – and sometimes only half a day at that (recent FI). I doubt any in our group would take off a Friday to attend a local con – no offense. Again, just letting you know how some think. Also wouldn't drive up Friday night as traffic then is a nightmare on I95 coming from B'more.

Still, I am glad to hear your con did well. I hope to make it sometime. :-)

Jim,

Don't let the door hit you.

Duncan

historygamer25 Jan 2018 7:45 p.m. PST

What door? I didn't go. :-)

I supported your club's con for years when it was in Baltimore.
Just trying to make a suggestion on how to get more people to attend. I meant no offense.

Didn't Buck just say you all might have to cancel Friday if you don't get more people attending?

I still wish you guys success.

Sometimes it is hard to tell which post is for real and which ones are just pot stirrers.

Late to the party, but here's my Barrage Con report.

TL;DR: Barrage was great!

Had a great time last weekend with at Barrage XXI, the gaming convention organized by the HAWKs. You can read the full write up with lots of photos on my blog, Scrum in Miniature: link

Bibliophile: heroic foulups are always grist for the mill at Schlegl's Ferry. I played in one of Chris's "Nazi's Invade the North Pole" as Santa, mind you, and got the Jolly Old Elf done in by the panzer he had been attacking. The stain will remain forever….

historygamer26 Jan 2018 7:29 a.m. PST

Again, I meant no offense and am sorry if anyone took my posts in the wrong way. I was simply lobbying for the HAWKS to consider adding a one day entrance fee in the future to perhaps increase attendance. I was basing that on my own and my friends' observations.

I was a bit surprised by Buck's comment that the intent of the flat fee was to try to lead people to attend Friday. Again, I was only offering our group's thoughts/input on that as well. Not my intent to offend.

The HAWKS have an outstanding reputation for running fun games and need no endorsement from anyone on that front. I was gaming with some of the HAWKS members long before there was a HAWKS group. I have the utmost respect for Duncan as well.

Apologies if my efforts to lobby for such were poorly phrased. Enough said. :-(
