Super cool. ZU-57-2 is radar guided? Hoping so I can jam em and my US Marine helborne company will fly right by…

BattlerBritain21 Jan 2018 6:10 a.m. PST

I don't think the ZSU-57-2 had radar.

evbates21 Jan 2018 8:24 a.m. PST

It did not have radar.

Helios vs unsuppressed AAA (even optically guided)? I wouldn't do that. Unless you really want a bunch of dead Marines…

Very Cool Indeed !!! thumbs up

Uparmored – The tactic/technique used to handle enemy AAA/ADA in the US ARMY was called SEADS. I.e : Suppression of Enemy Air Defense Systems.

Mortars/FA would fire at known or suspected enemy AAA/ADA locations/positions along the flight route(s). Sometimes CAS even could be used. [or Naval gunfire/missile support]

An Air Assault Landing Force, would go in along the flight routes right behind the SEADS. The Force, if all assets were available, would generally consist of something like this :

Lead Escalon: Air Cav LOACHs[OH-6s/58s] and Gunships[AH1s/64s] in the lead behind the SEADS.

The Main body would be in serials of assault lift ships. I.e. : UH1s, UH60s, etc.

With Attack Helicopters from an Attack Bn, i.e. LOACHs and Gunships flying on the flanks and rear of the Assault formations.

If you don't use SEADS you may not like the outcome. As C12 mentioned … E.g., IIRC, the 1st CAV at Karbala, Iraq, GWII. SEADS was not used in fear of collateral damage, etc. The AH-64s had all 30+ aircraft damaged with 1 shot down, IIRC. In this attempt to take out some Saddam's Mech/Armor. And most if not all the damage was done by AAA guns/MGs … not missiles.

Proper use of SEADS would turn that ZSU-57/2, "the crew(?)", the young lady, the Che' poster and that cat … into quite a "mess" …

He or she would probably be collateral damage I'm afraid … frown … Sorry …

You got that right ! Canines are the same … Sometimes they know when something bad is going to happen way before humans do ! evil grin

Marine Anti-Armor Specialists (TOW & Dragon gunners) had a Priority of Targets list.
1. AAA & anything with 2 or more antennas.

Yes, the US ARMY had the same. Generally targeting AAA and CnC as priority targets.

Kill his AAA that let's your CAS and Gunships fly in supporting the ground troops with less interference from majority of the enemy AAA.

And it's always a good idea to kill off their leadership. Even though they may rapidly replace them … well … you can kill off their replacements too … repeat as needed.

Thanks as usual Legion 4, great info. Looks like my landing force might have a chance after all!

Right so before the Cobras even get there with the Phrogs you got all kinds of suppression going on to clear the path. Nice.

Those waves of different aircraft came from experience in Vietnam I'm sure. I guess if you had that CAS you might even have some USAF Wild Weasels coming in. Cool!!

all kinds of suppression going on to clear the path.
That is the bottom line. This is similar to the way Strike Packages operated in SE Asia. Wild Weasels would be in the lead. CAP would protect the CAS/Bombers. It's like "combined arms" in the air.

SEADS is the way to insure that your Assault assets get to where they are supposed to go. But as always there is never a 100% guarantee. All you can do is "change" the odds into your favor. Techniques like SEADS will do that for you …
