Has anyone played a scenario inspired by the film, "The Final Countdown?" In the movie, the U.S.S. Nimitz is warped back to the present day before it can launch a surprise attack against the Japanese fleet bearing down on Pearl Harbor. Just wondered if anyone was inspired enough to game an attack by the Nimitz on the Japanese Fleet and possibly a mini-campaign on what would have happened next?

Never have but could imagine even a squad of infantry today go back to WWI or II

I'm afraid it wouldn't be much of a scenario. Even the 1970's Nimitz packed enough firepower to sink the entire Japanese fleet and do it out of range of anything the opposing ships would have. And then go after the Japanese homeland. The Japanese A/C would be so outclassed the biggest problem the Nimitz fighters would have is slowing down enough to engage them.

You don't need to use your jets against their fighters at all. Just use your attack aircraft to sink their carriers.

Yep, gamed it many years ago using the Harpoon rules. The GM ran the IJN, so all the players were on the USN side.

Nimitz only carried 34-36 attack planes, most of them A7 Corsairs. While the Intruders could fire Harpoon missiles, the Corsairs drop plain old gravity bombs and had to penetrate the IJN AA defenses to make attacks.

IIRC the IJN lost all their carriers, several heavies were damaged and several lighter combatants sunk. The USN lost a couple of Intruders to AA fire and one Tomcat was downed by a super lucky Japanese Zero.

The players called it, even though a few wanted to do a second strike and also bring along the S-3 Vikings with torpedos, but there wasn't any point.

It would seem there is a series of books by William Forstchen about time travel and alternate universe in the Lost Regiment series

The old Victory Games solitaire game Carrier, has the option of taking the Nimitz vs IJN in the Solomons.
A lot of fun.
