"THE NEW FOX comedy The Orville stars Seth MacFarlane as the captain of a Star Trek-style starship. In fact the similarities to Star Trek are so overwhelming that science fiction editor John Joseph Adams is surprised they haven't resulted in a lawsuit.

"I'm kind of baffled that it's legal that they're allowed to do this, because it's barely a parody," Adams says in Episode 288 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "It's so exactly Star Trek. You could take the Orville ship and put it in an episode of Next Generation and no one would blink."

The similarities to Star Trek even extend to the show's format, which is highly episodic, with the crew of the Orville exploring a new location every week. It's a throwback to an earlier style of television that author Robert Repino really enjoys…"

Sounds a little out of date, there. The first season ended, and it received a lot of kudos for simply being good and lightly humorous science fiction. Sure, it is a love letter to TNG with a few footnotes about not being so damn stodgy, but some of the stories have been great – "Firestorm" is a truly brilliant character study, while "Majority Rule" was a chilling and at the same time kinda hilarious look at social media as community consciences that left the "Black Mirror" episode on a similar theme rather the worse by comparison.

Love the Orville and not giving up at all, I also like the Black mirror episode (nothing like the Orville)

I like the Orville, best ST series of the bunch.

Watched a few, never impressed. I have better things to do with the time.

Overall I enjoyed Season 1. It's not a bad ST parody at all. If you like 'Galaxy Quest' it's the same thing.

But Galaxy Quest was funny. This was, not.

It's funny if you think that GEICO commercial of the guy loosing the keys to his space fighter is funny.

Seth MacFarlane's brand of humor might not be for everybody.

I liked it more than I thought I would but less than Galaxy Quest.

Why is The Orville so much like Star Trek? It's the number of Star Trek franchise directors that have directed episodes of The Orville.

I find it entertaining …

As I said before, I went in fearing the worse. When I looked a the clock next there was only 10 minutes left. I wish I could say that about the pilot episode of the new X-files.

Surprising good stories with just enough humor included.

Seth MacFarlane played on Enterprise as a crewman in a few episodes, and if you read the show credits he brings in quite a few people for both acting roles as well as show production.

I like it,and look forward to season 2.

I liked Galaxy Quest. I like Orville. And you get a new episode every week.
