What is your favorite battle from the Colonial period?

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP15 Jan 2018 2:22 p.m. PST

Isandlwana (Well I am partial to Zulus)

Bashytubits15 Jan 2018 2:42 p.m. PST

Another vote for Isandlwana, but I also like the little big horn. My friends don't know it yet but we will be gaming both of those very soon, my armies are almost finally fully painted.

Maiwand

Interesting how many of the battles named were won by the 'native' side. I guess we all love an underdog.

Me, too, for the record. I like the Battle of Cut Knife Creek, Maiwand and Isandlwana.

Have played Adowa (as Italians – and got my butt beat) and Isandlwaba – liked the latter better; also like the Battle of Batoche (now how's that for an obscure colonial battle!)

Little Big Horn, only played it once though at a Historicon, it was an epic size game. Oh we cavalry folks lost, shocking I know.

Ulundi or Omdurman.

Some good picks here. Two great ones not yet mentioned are Hlobane and Tamai. Both close run things…

Ragbones17 Jan 2018 5:13 p.m. PST

Mmm…Tofrek and Tamai…great suggestions.

Frederick-With or without Dusty Rhodes?

Isandlwana: for some reason it catches the imagination like no other.

Graham at El Teb and Little Big Horn would be runners-up.

Rorkes Drift – gotta love a good singsong.

Elandslaagte for me: Highlanders, a brilliantly executed infantry attack, four VCs and a cavalry charge – what's not to like?

And the best bit:

‘On the day after the battle the ILH [Imperial Light Horse] reached camp weary and worn and dismounted alongside the Gordons' lines as that regiment was on the point of drawing a beer ration. Spontaneously as each Gordon received his measure he carried it across and gave it to a comrade in the ILH — a generous self-denying tribute.'

Any battle which moves a Highlander to give away his beer ration has to have been a noteworthy one.
