I need Africans with machetes and halberds, suitable for the 1500s. I got a couple of packs of the Afro-Caribbean Renegades from Foundry (awesome figs), but they really look like runaways (Cimarrons) . . . very wild.

I need some that still look like they are either still in the service of their masters or freed blacks, to represent the African slaves and free companies used by the Spanish during the 1500s.

Thanks in advance.

I know what you are looking for. Have you seen that Osprey on the Imperial Chinese with the african slave soldier with halberd(?).

The only range I can think of is the Trent Miniatures stuff. I havn't seen them 'in the flesh' but WI had picture of some native types. Dont know if they had machetes etc.

Query-would they have been that well dressed? I know the Osprey plate has the guy in quilted armour.

Otherwise, I cant think of any ranges off hand.

Try Old glory Pirate range, the Voodoo Warriors.

Hi Arturo,

I can tell the thread has been started by you just by reading the titles :^) Have you heard anything from Eureka 100 club Caribeans? I e-mailed them for 24 figures but haven't heard yet. Do you also have a link showing the Foundry Cimaroons? Thanks.

Ralph,

1 ) Re: Eureka's Carib Indians
I only have the link to their Caribs ( link ) and Nic' email address for inquiries:
nicr@eurekamin.com.au
I have never done a 100 club but, I am told, these things can take up to a year.

2 ) Re: Foundry's "Afro-Caribbean Renegades" ( Cimarrons )
No link on the Cimarrons from Foundry. However, I do have a picture of what the ones from ebay looked like, if you want me to email it to you. After I got hold of 24 on ebay, I discovered that Foundry still produced and sold them, though I do not know how if they are not on any listing or web page.

Confirmed pack numbers for the Foundry "El Dorado Afro-Caribbean Renegades":ED9 and ED10

I believe ED9 has mixed weapons, while ED10 has the archers.

I guess they would have been on the El Dorado page, but did not make the cut (since only 8 packs are displayed per Foundry page).

Too bad Eureka doesn't make 28mm Africans (compatible in quality and proportions with Foundry's El Dorado range) with arquebus, pikes, crossbows, machetes and the occasional morion and buckler.

That would be an awesome set and would make it all complete. :)

Hi Arturo,

Thanks for the Foundry blister numbers. I'll check out the Cimaroons at Age Of Glory at Historicon.

Ralph,

Just got an email from Nic on the Eureka Caribs (Indians). Seems like emailing will not do to make an official order on the 100 Club. I am still new at this, so I will give it another try.

I made a contingent of African troops for my Portugese Colonial army in DBR, I took "fuzzy-wuzzy" figs from Sudan Wars ranges and added halberds to some, also as some were Arab, I used the arab Sudan figures too. These would be people from East side of Africa in the Zanzibar area. Foundry Darkest Africa range also has good options. Natives with open hands got swords and halberds added. I never found any figs with the quilted armor shown in the Osprey book, however.

You mention you are doing a Spanish army. These Africans would be quite different from the Portugese types that fought in Africa and India. For my DBR Colonial Spanish Army, I made some African and some Indian units. The Spanish created companies of various races. They coded everyone according to their racial mix — Euro – African, Euro – Indian, and Afro – Indian mixes down to 1/32 of each "blood" type. These were used in Central America

Used the Foundry Pirate series African looking figuress with halberd and musket. I conveted the halberds to pikes which was more common.
