One think you can count on in The Miniatures Page world is that no matter what the subject, someone will find something to complain about. With that in mind, I'd like to propose the following poll: If you were to win $50 USD million in the lottery what will you find to complain about? 1) Taxes will take too much of my winnings 2) My relatives will want me to buy them stuff 3) It should have been more |

The weather. The government. The officiating in sports leagues. The price of gasoline. (Everybody complains about that, because you have to.) That McDonald's isn't anything like it use to be. The political party I hate. People who hate the political party I like. Games Workshop. (Well, not me. I think they're just fine. But it seems to be a thing on TMP.) The horrible hash being made of the Star Trek franchise. The horrible hash being made of the Star Wars franchise. That I still can't buy a flying car. That we still don't have a viable interplanetary manned space vehicle. Rap music. Rap music as halftime entertainment. Has-been pop stars as halftime entertainment. Whiny, sanctimonious celebrities. The media. The other media. The people who complain about the media while not recognizing they're also media. That In-N-Out isn't available locally. Awards shows. Awards given to movies/music/etc. that I don't think deserve the same. Political Correctness. That my tea is cold. That my soda is warm. AND… . . . Silly poll topics. |

Taxes? Do you lot allow the Govt to take taxes from your lottery winnings? Bloody Hell, here in Oz, if they tried to do that, there would be a revolt. We expect to pay taxes on our hard earned wages but try taking it from our betting winnings!! |

I am all out of margaritas? Woodhouse…… But seriously, my father in law was the President of the local fire department. He got a letter to check out the condition of people at a house, particulary the roof. He wrote back that the roof was in need of repairs. He was pretty confused but figure "ehh, got nothing else to do" Comes to find out the writer of the letter had one the lottery and is asked for money all the time that he has other people check out if the "Dear Rich Guys, I need money" letters are true… |

I just saw on the news. A 20 year old kid in FL, IIRC, just won a Lottery … taking $281 USD million in a lump sum. Hope he puts some of that to good use and be a bit of philanthropist. And/or gets some good advise from his parents(?). But parents are not always good "examples" as we see at times. And many times we see lottery, etc., winners who get big lump sums. Are broke within a few years. Just like some, but not all, professional athletes. They are very young, get paid millions, then get hurt after a few years … and they have no money left/saved ! |
goragrad | 13 Jan 2018 3:13 p.m. PST |
As noted, that kid will get a bit over 140M. Nothing to sneeze at, but as has been noted elsewhere the big winners in the US are the governments raking in the taxes. No matter which person actually wins any particular lottery drawing the government wins every time. |

First, the government takes one half of the money specifically earmarked for something, usually education. (editorial aside: since money is fungible they can then budget less to education and more to their other budgetary "needs".) Second, if you take the annuity, it is taxed as income in each year in which it is received. Third, if taken as a lump sum, you get the amount which if invested would provide the value of the annuity. That is, after that amount is first taxed as income. Fourth, as always, any Earned Interest or Capital Gains realized from investing the winnings is also taxable. One can only guess at the total amount collected, but think the lump sum times two. The risk odds are not with the house, the risk odds are fair. But the reward odds are set by the house. The loser gets exactly what he paid for; i.e. entertainment in the value of what he chose to risk. But the winner is short changed. His reward is shaved. That's how the house makes it's money. And that is only one way the government takes money. |
Legion 4 | 14 Jan 2018 8:53 a.m. PST |
No matter which person actually wins any particular lottery drawing the government wins every time. Yep … the governments at pretty much all levels makes some good money in taxes, etc. A Racino was built about 4-5 miles from my home. Right off the interstate. It is brining in lots and lots of cash for the businessmen, investors, all levels of government, etc. Plus all the "collateral damage" to nearby businesses like hotels, eateries, etc., along with some of the more "unsavory" aspects, e.g. prostitution, etc. But everyone involved is making so much $$$. No one really will complain or cares. First, the government takes one half of the money specifically earmarked for something, usually education. When the state says they will use some of the revenue from lotteries, casinos, etc. is a great "selling" point". For basically legalized gambling, etc. to use a portion for infrastructure, education, etc. However, not much of that always goes to the proposed "fund(s)", it appears many times. Gee … who would have thought legalized gambling would have some "corruption" involved ? Just like with legalizing alcohol during the "roaring" 20s. It cost more to try to stop it. Then it would to legalize and in turn tax it ! |

You don't pay taxes on lotto winnings in Norway. I would mostly complain that I didn't win the $100 USD 000 000 lotto that was the week before. |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 14 Jan 2018 8:16 p.m. PST |
I'm a very lucky person: I have already won the lottery once. Let me tell you, that $27 USD has been earning a pretty penny in my retirement account for some years now. If I won $50 USD million in the lottery, I would realize about $25 USD million after federal and state income taxes. That would generate investment revenue of about $2.5 USD million per year, or about $1.25 USD million after taxes. That's about $120,000 USD a month net. I would, at that point, certainly start to complain about how hard it is to get good help, how difficult it is to get decent caviar and pink champagne outside Russia, and how expensive artist's studio space with adequate parking and security is in San Francisco and Hong Kong. This would be a good time for me to win $50 USD million in the lottery. If it had happened when I was a much younger man, I would have spent about $49 USD million on women, booze, parties, and having fun, and then would have just wasted the rest. |
