(For those of us who play them), what licensed property (book, comic, movie, video game, etc) do you really wish was made into an old-school, pen and paper RPG game?

Now, I know that aspiring GMs can use a generic system (like GURPS) to handle anything, but why do the work yourself if another company can do a licensed property justice with a good system and supportive supplements?

My biggest wish right now is Mass Effect. These games just scream old-school rpg to me. Come up with a good system and the setting is perfect. Plenty of room for supplements focusing on the alien races, the Citadel, Cerberus and the Alliance, to name just a few.

I'm playing Andromeda now, and while it's not as good as some of the earlier titles (Scott Ryder is no Commander Shepard, that's for sure!) I'm still loving it.

Others I would like to see:

David Wingrove's Chung Kuo series (depressing, but very cool)

Dune (again, you could do this setting with any generic system, but there's a lot here to cover)

Blade Runner

ERB's Barsoom setting

Fantasy RPGS are pretty well-represented with Licensed properties, even if some (Like Pern) are OOP. Can't think of any I'd want off the top of my head…

Thoughts?

Cubicle 7 has just kickstarted Barsoom.

maybe more obscure but i would love to see something from Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow.

Or a book i recently read called the aeronauts windlass.

blade runner would be cool.

As much as i love Barsoom, not sure i would want to play it.

Space RPG based on H. Beam Piper Universe.

Eclectic Wave11 Jan 2018 2:16 p.m. PST

C.J. Cherryh's – Down below station universe.

Traveler's not gritty enough, Firefly is too over the top, it's hard to find the right system.

I would like to see something like they did for My Little Pony done for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

A bit sword and sorcery, a bit fantasy tech. Loads of character archetypes to mess around with.

It is again one of those that can be done with existing systems, but would really like to see a dedicated game for playing with the kids.

There was a Barsoom RPG, c. 1978 and evidently there's another at kickstarter phase.. As with any franchise deal, good luck finding copies of anything done on the previous license.

For the rest?
Bradley's "Darkover"
Chandler's Rim Worlds (Possible)
Randall Garrett's "Lord Darcy"
Norton's "Witch World"
Schmitz' "Witches of Karres" (Possible)
"Doc" Smith's "Lensman"
And almost-Barsoom. The World of CL Moore's Northwest Smith and Leigh Brackett's John Eric Stark. (A supplement to a Barsoom RPG might do. What I really want is the campaign book and maps.)

These are the classics which have a lot of adventures to go on/stories to tell and have enough distinct types that they'd make troubles for a generic RPG. Chandler is a possible because you might manage him in a generic setting and Schmitz because there might not be a full enough universe. But I'm confident of the other four.

And I wish SJG hadn't screwed up "GURPS Mars," which was spread much too thin. Too many one- or two-page ideas where I needed history, races and maps.

Poul Anderson's Polesotechnic League.

Good calls all, to which I would add Niven's "Known Space."

Cyrus the Great11 Jan 2018 11:32 p.m. PST

Joy Chant's "House of Kendreth" series.

Moomin.

Regarding Barsoom, very old Dragon magazines had article on D&D:ing Barsoom which was reprinted in one of those Best of Dragon Magazine collections.

Also Modiphius was supposed to publish John Carter The Roleplaying Game, as well as John Carter: Warlord of Mars boardgame, in 2017.

Dune
Lensman

tsofian02 Feb 2018 1:07 p.m. PST

Zelazny's Dilvish the Damned world
Glen Cook's Dread Empire books
Taylor Anderson's Destroyermen books
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Joel Rosenberg's Guardian of the Flame series or even better his D'SHAI series (these are wonderful!)

Twoball Cane21 Apr 2018 7:08 p.m. PST

Both the anime series Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop would be great…they have complete universes. Nadia and the secret of blue water might be good…has some great villains and capt. Nemo!

David Johansen26 Apr 2018 7:54 p.m. PST

Guardians of the Flame is great but it's basically a screed about how crappy it would be to actually live in a fantasy world. Even so, it's basically D&D. Some might argue for Rolemaster or GURPS given the brutal and gritty nature of combat, but even so, the point is very much that life in a D&D world would be harsh and first level D&D is plenty harsh.
