I am planning games in 28mm with around 30 figures each side with a couple of BMPs for the Russians.

I already have Arc of Fire which I think should do fine but would welcome any other suggestions. Anyone using Arc of Fire for such games?

Never even heard of Arc of Fire, what's it like?

Force on Force would work.

Try Force on Force by Ambush Alley

I'll third Force on Force. It always makes for an exciting game, specializes in asymmetrical fights, and will work well for the size of games you're planning.

I would recommend Rapid Fire! 'Able Archer 83-84' Cold War Rules Adaptation. Bottom of the page. Hope it helps.

As always, comments are appreciated.

Take care

I've used Force on Force in my Russian/Afghan games. Seems to be what it was designed for.

I am not a fan of the quality die concept used by Force on Force. I wrote a Soviet Afghan War supplement for the Two Hour Wargame Vietnam rules FNG which are still probably on the THW Yahoo site in the files section. There is also a gent somewhere who has done a very good Vietnam variant of the Chain of Command rules from Too Fat Lardies that could easily be converted to SOviet Afghan War. Frankly, I am putting my games on hold until Too Fat comes out with their Fighting Season rule set—if they ever do. Was supposed to be imminent two years ago and then disappeared.

I think that they are not as popular as they are not in the "bright and shiny" format.

I've played a Disposable Heroes variant for that war. Pretty good!

Thanks for the replies.

The Disposable Heroes Soviet Afghan War supplement is called 'By The Knife' and it was a free PDF. But I can't find it on Iron Ivan's site now.
