Another that seemed to disappear :-/ I've read the Osprey on Austrian infantry so I know some musicians had non-standard uniform but is there anywhere that illustrates any of these variations – eg the 30th and 50th having drummers in "Turkish Dress", use of red or blue coats etc? I wouldn't want to go overboard with this but some of this sort of variation could be fun if I had a better idea of how it actually looked.

Thanks,
John

yes indeed musicians looked differently, illustrations do exist, I have to check on that.

Ahhh. Interesting. But are these bandsmen rather than regimental drummers?

Be good to see some Austrian colour

Plenty of colour in the Austrian army. Their cavalry was as colourful as anyone's and take a look at the landwher and Hungarian Inssurection troops for more. No need to get snow blind with the Kaiserliks…

Funny how these messages get lost. Might have ended up in a cigar case….would make a good ACW scenario that would!

It's a great picture thanks – I love the Bruegelesque faces.

Marc:
"But are these bandsmen rather than regimental drummers?"

Does that really matter? In the assault on Aspern "the 17th Reuss-Plauen Regiment {Czechs} advanced forward with great bravery, their band playing, soldiers singing war and religious songs." So a drummer representing something like that could well be dressed in a somewhat over the top regimental band costume. I note though that it isn't IR17 being represented in the print.

Cheers,
John

Well John, I personally would agree, but this is the Naps board on TMP, so folks can sure get shirty real quick around these parts :-)

Me, I accept your point, but I do know that bands had more leeway, so I was interested to know if the Austrians ever went as far as the French did at regimental drummer level.

For me, I have bough the Franznap pack of drum majors for my troops, and will be adding these to command stands and units as I feel, so I am all in favour of some colour
