"The Army is training thousands more soldiers in tunnel warfare, part of an effort to be ready to offer President Trump military options for North Korea, U.S. officials tell NPR.

North Korea is honeycombed with thousands of tunnels and bunkers, some of them discovered leading across the border and close to the South Korean capital, Seoul. Others in North Korea are hundreds of feet deep and could be used to hide troops and artillery, as well as chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

Along with training thousands more troops, officials say the Pentagon is buying more specialized gear needed for tunnel operations: radios and night vision goggles, along with acetylene torches and bolt cutters…"

Surely all you need to do with enemy tunnels is seal off all but one entrance/exit and then wait outside that one with a lot of ordnance at the ready?

They need to go around a lot of Veteran's Hospitals and other Veterans Clubs/hang-outs and find some of the Vietnam era Tunnel Rats for some hints. Like the special no-blast revolvers and ammo that were developed for use in tunnels. The tunnels in North Korea are likely to be much the same, maybe just a bit better constructed.

From my admittedly limited reading about Vietnam tunnel rats…the tunnels were usually pretty complex networks with many entrances. So finding them all is a problem. And they had gas traps, ladders up/down, S bends to defend against grenades, large rooms to minimize shock waves, etc.

So doing stuff like pumping smoke into the entrance you found in order to spot another entrance, might not work. Collapsing / bulldozing an entrance only closes that entrance. Setting off satchel charges might clear booby traps, but only for a small area.

I keep thinking of the movie "Them".

One of the better ideas I read about for chasing down all the tunnel entrances was to grab a pile of smoke grenades (usually at least two, though the example was a bit, well, 1960s/70s) and stick a Mighty Mite blower in the first entrance you found.

The blower would push the smoke through most of the complex and out the other openings.

The example had the Tunnel Rat grab a red smoke and a blue smoke, throw them down the tunnel, fire up the blower, and then crank up Hendrix's "Purple Haze" while they waited for the smoke to fill up the entire complex and mark all the exits.

The unit promptly soiled themselves when something like 100 tunnel exits showed purple smoke!
