Looks like GW is continuing to go strong.

Revenue is up in all categories.

Everyone griped about Tom Kirby running the company into the ground, but the turnaround makes their criticisms seem accurate. Many of the "new" strategies the new CEO introduced were really a return to the strategies that made the company such a growth story originally. In retrospect, you wonder what a better CEO could have done with all that money the LOTR license made for them.

Pictors Studio09 Jan 2018 10:29 a.m. PST

Yeah, it is a shame GW went through those painful 10 years. Since the launch of AoS they have just been knocking it out of the park. I can't say that everything they released has been great but there have been many, many great releases.

Shadespire isn't really my thing but one of the local stores sold it like crazy and said it was the best game of its type out there.

I would love to see one more Horus Heresy board game. Maybe with plastic breachers or assault marines. An assault on the Vengeful Spirit during the battle of terra would be amazing. Especially if you got a plastic Horus and Emperor with it. Maybe even a plastic dead Sanguinus too.

I'm sure Mithmee will be along in a few minutes to rain on the parade :)

Personally I think it's awesome and kudos to GW for turning things around quite so emphatically!

"Good for them," he said, patiently waiting on new Necromunda Van Saar.

VonTed09 Jan 2018 12:02 p.m. PST

I assume that is because I started playing 🤪

Von Ted, partially. You and thousands of others coming back to the fold.

I really hope they haven't given up on the 30k boxed sets with plastic minis.
I'd love to see a Mkii armor set possibly with jet bikes, land speeders, or jump troops.

As for campaigns, I'd like to see Istvaan III but I know they'd never do a set with 2 Traitor Legions.

GW doing good business is good for the gaming community regardless of how you feel about them.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik09 Jan 2018 12:32 p.m. PST

30K never really appealed to me with all the overpriced Forgeworld resin and archaic space marine armor variants, but as long as they release something cool for 40K they can always:

Pictors Studio09 Jan 2018 12:46 p.m. PST

Well the Primaris marines were certainly something cool for 40K: long demanded and very much needed.

Private Matter09 Jan 2018 1:11 p.m. PST

I do not play any of the Games Workshop games as they do not appeal to me; however, I have noticed a lot more people talking about them and playing them at my FLHS and in my old club across the pond. Good on them.

Billy Goat Wargaming09 Jan 2018 1:45 p.m. PST

a 344% increase in profits is not to be sniffed at.

nsolomon9909 Jan 2018 4:06 p.m. PST

Good riddance to Tom Kirby, detest the man and his policies.

Wonderful news for the new GW, long may they prosper.

Skinflint Games09 Jan 2018 4:52 p.m. PST

Good on them, can't afford their stuff but it's nice to see a Brit company doing well – I'm looking forward to seeing the new Adeptus Titanicus, myself

Pizzagrenadier09 Jan 2018 8:04 p.m. PST

I have zero interest in the new 40k timeline, lore, return of the Primarchs, etc. And and completely meh about the Primaris marines etc. (My 40k universe will stay firmly planted in the Badab era thankyouverymuch)

But… with that said, I love what GW has been doing with the Horus Heresy (boxed games etc.) And am 100% all in on Necromunda and will be with Adeptus Titanicus as well.

Keep it coming! They've gotten a lot of my money this year.

Syrinx009 Jan 2018 8:53 p.m. PST

AOS left me cold but I liked the new terrain sets they released with the new 40K. Now I just have to assemble and paint all of them.

By John 5409 Jan 2018 10:38 p.m. PST

In my figure-painting business (the Battle Brush, look me up on instagram, much quality, plenty cheapness!) I paint a lot of 40K, and AOS stuff, probably 60% of my work is from GW. Having painted other companies products as well, l feel qualified to say GW plastic ranges are incredibly detailed, well cast, with very dynamic possibilities in posing. Even simple things, like the socket waist joint, on their Space marines, makes for great posing styles. And the detail is just amazing. You can crap on about Mantic being better, but, sorry, they are just not, simple as that. ‘GeeDubs' have pushed the ceiling for wargamng figure quality, and painting standards up faaaar higher than they have ever been. I'm not a ‘fan-boi' I don't play their games, (apart from first edition Space Hulk, which is STILL a classic) but, as a professional painter, I comment as I find, and they are at the top of the game! (Pardon the pun). I am very pleased at the news they are doing so well, means more work for me, more power to their elbows!

Cheers for indulging my ramblings…….

John.

"Fake news!" – Mithmee

Patrick R10 Jan 2018 6:04 a.m. PST

You can be pro or anti GW, but as long as they make a buck, it's a sign that kids can still be tempted by tiny little figures in an age where we're going to have "More real than reality VR" games

Play the latest Star Wars computer games and it's like you are inside the movies, lighting, textures and grain. It's uncanny.

If they can compete with that, out hobby should survive a while longer.

Centurio Prime10 Jan 2018 7:58 a.m. PST

I rarely see kids buying GW stuff. I don't think that is the demographic they need to worry about. Unless you define "kids" as 20+ year olds with decent jobs. Granted, there is competition from video games in that segment.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP10 Jan 2018 9:41 a.m. PST

How about 50 year old kids Centurio?
;-)

kallman10 Jan 2018 9:47 a.m. PST

I see mostly twenty and thirty somethings who have jobs and disposable income spending on 40K plus some college kids that save up to get the next box set they want. Of course I have returned to the fold and been having a blast with the 8th edition rules. Yes, they models are overpriced when compared to what you could get in regards purchasing historical miniatures. Apples and oranges really. Clearly the market will bear the cost point that GW has set and that is all that matters to the bottom line. I confess I have ponied up the dollars for certain single figures and sets to flesh out my older collection. That is my right to spend my custom as I choose.

Centurio Prime10 Jan 2018 10:18 a.m. PST

50 year old kid here

Eclipsing Binaries10 Jan 2018 10:22 a.m. PST

I'm upset to say, I turn into a 50 year old kid this weekend, and having played GWs games since Warhammer 1st edition, the product they are knocking out now is causing me the same cash problems as it did when I was a kid. It has been years since I was as continuously tempted by new stuff from them but it's almost weekly releases that I have to resist – mostly because my wife has realised there not actually for our wee boy.

Brian Smaller10 Jan 2018 1:40 p.m. PST

I think it is great they are doing well. They just wont make any money off me because their prices are too rich for me and what I am prepared to pay for my hobby.

The Beast Rampant10 Jan 2018 7:49 p.m. PST

Broken record here, but the real difference is respect for their roots, not treating their customers like sheep to be sheared, and the intersecting point between the two- reviving the good old stuff that made veteran fans love GW's offerings in the first place.

Wyatt the Odd Fezian10 Jan 2018 10:15 p.m. PST

Remember that they signed a deal with Wizkids a few months back to make clicky versions – and likely some variant of Attack Wing. That'll boost their bottom line as well.

Barin111 Jan 2018 12:35 a.m. PST

I was never into 40k, and I can't accept AoS and its models (trollslayers riding monsters? elfs riding monster bugs? Bleeped text?) so I think I'm not really interested in their products anymore. As for skirmishers I'm playing alternatives (Zombicide, Massive Darkness, Kingdom Death)- however I've seen that the return of some old Specialist Games sparkled some interest in the clubs – I see people playing Necromunda. Positive thing of GW doing well is that it will drive all alternative companies forward…but not that much as before. I've been looking at GW site recently and it seems that they have killed some my armies completely, and some are mixed with fantasy spacemarines…well I still have models to paint for my 5 old GW armies.

Zinkala12 Jan 2018 11:08 a.m. PST

I'm sort of like Barin1 except I played 40k. GW drove me off about 10 years ago with their prices and attitudes. In the late 80s and 90s GW was the biggest part of my gaming and I still own hundreds if not thousands of their minis. AoS does nothing for me, not the rules and not the minis. I'm happy to see them turning things around and bringing back some of the games I loved back when but I've also moved on with regards to rules. I'll still grab a few minis if I like them but it's not likely I'll ever be a big GW gamer like I used to be. Too many other companies out there now with offerings that I like better and only so much time and cash.

SouthernPhantom14 Jan 2018 1:55 p.m. PST

Good to see that dumping the approach of the last ten years paid off. I loathe GW rules, but enjoy the WH40K universe and models.

Rogzombie Fezian15 Jan 2018 3:36 p.m. PST

Tom Kirby was a toxic executive. HIs job was to bring the company down. I saw this practice several times while in retail.

Frank Wang19 Jan 2018 2:24 a.m. PST

There is no doubt that GW is the current industry leader. I just miss WFB.

SpittingBristles25 Jan 2018 1:30 p.m. PST

So who says 8th edition isn't good? Seems like its brought a lot of people back to the game (including myself). I'm glad they're back to doing so well.

Now if they could just actually produce another run of Space Marine Scout Bikes I'd have nothing to complain about XD

alpha3six25 Jan 2018 2:39 p.m. PST

There are plenty of people who dislike 8th edition, but many of these players have focused on 30k or have otherwise stopped complaining about 8th on here as it just creates an unhelpful air of negativity.
