This is the first encounter with the Early Libyans as a second is planned for the near future. Then, the Early Libyans will have an option to use the ‘fast' horde (5Hd) which account for half an army.

Robert, loved the AAR's and photos. Beautiful figures and terrain. Definitely puts me in the frame of mind to return to DBA. I have a few Biblical-era armies that haven't seen the light of day for ages. Now if only I can figure out where I put the rules…

Ragbones,

If it has been a while you might not have the latest version 3.0.

In the initial photo of each game you can see the middle line spanning a larger game board (80cm x 80cm).
This leaves a bigger quadrant that can be filled with nice terrain pieces with rarely any being discarded.

As the armies deploy 3BW from the centre line, action usually starts by the second turn.
These infantry conflicts generally require 5 to 8 turns to reach a decision (+/- 40 min.).

Cheers,

Thanks, Robert. I'm sure I don't have the latest version. Do you like it better than the original? Did you have to rebase your armies?

Actually, I left the ancient game selling all my DBA armies about five or six years ago, keeping only the Sassanid Persian and Later Imperial Rome.

The test phase for 3.0 revived my interest as it was a much better game. So much so, that I started collecting and painting new armies which did make use of the deeper bases. Rebasing the small number of blade and warband (Late Roman) therefore was not a major issue.

There is no rebasing required for elements that didn't change. Some people are now choosing to base their foot on 20mm×40mm for ease. The game itself is a whole lot better than the earlier versions, as I am now discovering. Some folks, though, could not accept the new version of DBA, and remain to this day somewhat testy about criticism of their product or interpretations. They went on to develop not one, but TWO of their own distinct knockoffs of DBA. Well, you know what they say about imitation…

If the new version is hard to get, or appears pricy, just get the Kindle version of Sue Barker's "Start Ancient Wargaming". It includes the full rules, worked examples, and most of the Major Leagues/1st Division army lists.

Thanks timurilank and warhorse. I think I'm going to pick up a copy of DBA 3.0 and give it a go.
