Let's try this again — got Bugged on the first attempt…

Does anyone make FIW 28mm American Provincials with their brims cut short and round instead of in cocked hats?

Even though these are from the American Revolution, Fife & Drum Miniatures has American militia in round hats: link (Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, A-5 thru A-8). They should work fine as FIW American provincials.

And these are fantastic figures, well sculpted by Richard Ansell and to a 1:56 scale and 28mm size.

King's Mountain Miniatures do a variety of separate heads mostly for the AWI but the range includes various roundhats that you could substitute.

Try Front Rank French and Indian War British Infantry in campaign dress, or the Light Infantry.
Paint the coats blue instead of red.
Or see if the Rangers would work.

Thanks for the tips!

I have some Fife & Drum figures and do like the sculpting. I have some of those mixed in with local militia. I forgot they had a few round hats, but 4 poses isn't a lot to work with. And going for the New York Provincials in Yellow/Green Drab coats, and I think NY was pretty good about issuing actual coats to everyone.

I hadn't checked the Front Rank campaign dress, those would work. Their Lights and Rangers all have jockey caps. Not a lot of campaign dress poses, but they would mix well with Galloping Major (with the best pose variety of all!) and save some of the head-swapping work.

Would the King's Mountain heads look like a reasonable size fit on Galloping Major torsos?

Oooh, that reminds me — Redoubt has separate ACW heads. The slouch hats may need a little trimming of the brim and would do fine. Plus they have negro heads, and black troops aren't uncommon in the Provincials.

I think I have some on hand, now to try and find them so I can check size compatability….

I've been trying to get hold of some of the extra heads from the Warlord plastics sprue to see if they'd be too slender or not for conversions on metal figs, but the locals who might have them haven't been able to find their spare bits. The plastic figures themselves aren't in Provincials' coats alas.

Orders are in now for a bunch of Galloping Major and replacement Redoubt heads, and for some Front Rank.

I'm curious as to what Provincial F&I unit wore round hats?

New York, round hats and green coats.

edit:
Now that I'm not on my phone, it's easier to hunt down links. I stumbled on this by checking Kronoskaf lookingspecifically for New York.

Following the reference link from that article brought me here:

A round hat is a cocked hat that came uncocked. grin

But much easier to uncock a felt hat than a metal one with all the thick folds cast right into the crown ~,~

I'm not seeing any source cited and the article said something about white belts which makes no sense since no one at the time was wearing white belts. I'd want a more reliable source.

Whatever it's faults, until such time as someone publishes a more comprehensive painting guide, Kronoskaf by default will have to be my first stop for references and then work out from there.

The reference links are at the bottom of the Krososkaf page, and the second link in my post is the one to the re-enactment group with photos.

Captain Terry's Company has more of their recent photos up on Facebook rather than the webpage.

It turns out the King's Mountain heads are in fact designed specifically to be compatible with Galloping Major, who recently started selling them on his own website too.

I found that out after ordering Redoubt, but there were other figs I needed from there too.

A round hat is certainly a more practical headwear than a tricorne of the period. It's just that if I were re-enacting this unit I'd want an original source. I'm not seeing that on the webpage, though it may in fact exist.

Here are painted examples of KMM heads on GM bodies.

By the way, I'm the owner of KMM!!

nevinsrip, those do look great!

It would be super if you had some sculpts for blacks and Indians with various hats too! (Long ponytail could be bent to fit over shoulders on assembly.)
