My latest blog post explains why I am such a fan of Test of Honour. It's not a surprise that it has won a Wargames Illustrated award. I also show my latest models.

Great looking model.

Hooked? Not yet, but Ive only played a short demo game at our FLGS and loved it. The mini's are terrific.

I have all but 'threw down' the $$ for the game. Probably will this wkend at "Rapier". The local game convention hosted by the Jacksonville Garrison club.

I'd appreciate suggestions as too reference (images mostly) of Clans of that period.
I'm thinking Osprey books, 'Net surfing. I'm looking for other colors beyond the starting 'Blue – Red' sets.
Of course theres always; "pick what I like and just go with it". 😎

Thanks Part time gamer. For reference, I'm a great fan of the pinterest site. Here's a link to my pinterest board but there are loads more boards out there:

Also take a look at the TOH face book group page. The pinned post at the top has plenty of links and the group itself is one of the most positive that I have been a part of with plenty of inspiration and help available from the members:

Finally, one of the attractions of the game for me has been the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously, so you can feel free to use a bit of artistic licence without fear that the 'button counters will get you!'I hope you have fun!

I didn't pick up this game because of the collectability factor (you have to buy the expansions to get the rules) and the very mediocre WF figures.

But a friend bought over Xmas and we had a game last week. And to be frank, I was suprised by how bad it is.

The box comes with very little in the way of rules or background information – even to the point where most of the weapon rules are actually missing. Not an issue for me, but joe public isn't going to learn anything about the period.

Game play has some nice ideas, but they are poorly implemented. Pure randomness means that combat can drag out over multiple turns without any resolution. The logic behind the multiple figure units doesn't stack up. A teppo armed unit may as well charge intp combat rather than reload.

It has little period feel, and could be just as easily played using any figures. And speaking of figures, well if you like the WF ones, then that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. But put them side by side with virtually any of the metal samurai ranges and they look terrible.

Maybe the expansions add some of the detail that the game is lacking, but as it stands I wouldn't give it more than 2 out of 5.

Disclaimer: I am the author of another set of samurai rules.

My complaint is the packaging. I love the new figures for the Bandits and Brigands expansion. But I don't play Test of Honour. The expansion box is $44. USD That's a bit step for 7 figures as I don't want the rest of the accoutrements. So I was happy to hear Warlord was going to package the figures separately. However, you can only buy three figures this way…….the 3 swordsmen for $16. USD

I'd like these figures, but I'm not buying them in these circumstances. Why doesn't Warlord sell all these figures by themselves? By the way, I'd be using them with Craig's ruleset, but that's just me. Nothing against Test of Honour.

I'm also not as down on the ex-WF figures, as Craig is. Arcane Steve's painting of the figures is a good argument for them. I also collect large armies and appreciate having many, many cheap Ashigaru. I think the WF Ashigaru and mounted Samurai are quite good. The regular Samurai…..not so much.
